| Transcript | From: Anne FitzGerald, Shanbally, Co. Tipperary, Ireland, 31 March 1831. To: her sister, Mary FitzGerald, Quebec, Canada, [apparently living at Mrs Dunn's, her aunt?]. Addressed to: Mrs Robert Dunn, the usual street, quebec, north america, or elsewhere. Letter on cream paper, folded and sealed with black sealing wax. Paper torn & in poor condition, pieces separated at fold lines, paper ripped at seals. No postal marks. Shanbally, March 31st, 1831. Dear Sister We received your Letter in October which gave us pleasure to hear you were in good health But we have sorrowfull [sorrowful?] to send you Concerning our Fathers Death who died last Christmas he was complaining of a cough for a month But he took to the bed on Saturday and Died that Day sunset which was on Chirstmas Day We were in Pretty good Circumstances then But judge how we are since it is easier perceive than Describe our situation of life and State of mind The journeyman that worked with my Father that has the Shanbally work now We are Still in the farm and under the Same rent We got no Sort of settlement as yet But then expect with the help of god that his Lordship wont be So Bad as to charge us with the Same rent as usual Dont fret at this news as you Did when you heard of your brothers death but keep up your Spirits and drive and industry for your self for home is not now as it was when you let it tho Short a period it is since There are alas many Change Come in this Place since and every Change for the worse. We would have wrote Before now But waiting for Spring Knowing we might get Some person that would take it by hand which way we are sending this letter Tell John Mahony that his parents are very angry with him for not writing to them and let not you take pattern by him for there is nothing that would Console our Disconsolate mother more than your frequent Correspondence as no other Consolation can be administered to her Nelly has a Daughter Since Christmas She and her family are Doing well now There was a letter received from John Corbett in Brunswick He is Doing well He sent for his son and one of his Brothers. I hope you will not neglect our warnings to take good Care of your health I have no [@?] present. But my mother Brother Sisters all and me Self send our best love and the same to me aunt and family and I remain until Death Your affectionate [Sister? torn paper] Anne FitzGer [Fitzgerald?] Tell me if quebec be a good p [place?] or [for?] needle Work which I am well experienced in now. If you were but So good as to free my passage for next spring. |
