| Transcript | 16 East 25th Street New York April 29th 1867 My Dear Cousin I have an opportunity of sending a small parcel for you, by a friend who has kindly offered to "Post" it, either at Liverpool or Queenstown. It contains Photographs of my nephew Jas. [James?] and his wife of New Orleans, and their four little daughters - the eldest Leonee - 13 - years old, the exact ages of the others I do not know - and also the pictures of my daughter Mary's three children of cincinati [Cincinnati?] - the young people grow up very rapidly - Margaret intends to have her family taken before long, when I hope to be able to send you some of them. In this parcel you will find a sketch of the monument which we have decided on for dear brother James - this simple & beautiful design, is by his Son, and I think you will agree with me in saying - that, as a work of Art it does him great credit. his whole heart and soul was in the endeavour to produce something fiting [fitting?] as a testimonial of love and veneration for the beloved memory of his dear Father "something worthy of him" and to my mind he has succeeded admirably. It is to be made of the purest and best quality of Italian marble and will be a little over twenty feet high. I have thought of the following as an inscription for the front top pannel [panel?]; perhaps you can suggest something different that might be thought better, and more appropriate. This monument is erected to the memory James Gallier archt. [Architect?] To be bold roman } of New Orleans raised letters, this } "by his son" nicely arranged and } As a Tribute to his Genius handsomely cut } Integrity and Virtue would I think } and his wife do pretty well } Catherine Maria Robinson of Barre Massachusetts They were lost in the Steamer Evening Star foundered at Sea On the 3d day of October 1866 I hope your family are all well, - and that my sister and nephew Wm [William?] are in good health; I have been expecting a letter from him for some time How does Mr Locke get on with Dr [Doctor?] Draper's book.
