| Transcript | [Page 1] [Directions?] 15 King St Blair hill Coatbridge Scotland August 17th 1900 To Brother John J Smith Worshipfull Master of Castledamph L O L [Loyal Orange Lodge?] No 1333 "Dear Sir & Brother" I take the pleasure of writing you these few lines to inform you that I have instructed Bro [Brother?] James McCallam Secty [Secretary?] of morning star LOL [Loyal Orange Lodge?] No 161 Coatbridge to write for my lines perhaps you will [Page 2] have Bro [Brother?] J McCallam's letter before this time relly [really?] I did not think he wood [would?] write so soon So I hope you will excuse me for not writing to you before this time as I promised to do so the last time you & I was [sic] talking I may say I never had time this Lodge which Intend [sic] Joining as far as I here [hear?] the [they?] are very strick [strict?] the [they?] have got the Rev Mr Winters for Chapplin [Chaplin?] So you may guess the [they?] are pretty strick [strict?] So I thought I wood [would?] prefere [prefer?] Joining this Lodge in preference to any other one [Page 3] So you might try and send them the first opportunity [opportunity?] I wood [would?] like you to write to me and let me know what is against them as I think surely I must be in dept [department?] for these last two years so I shall be very Glad to clear all up give my best respects to all my Bro [Brother?] Orange men hopping [hoping?] the [they?] will Stick to one another and keep the Lodge working it is the principle point of our cause [is?] So I think I must draw to a close in the Meantime yours Fraternally James Barker excuse write soon this scribble I will be much as I an in a obliged hurry [Page 4] hoping you are still keeping well yourself Please give my best respects to Mrs Smyth hopping [hoping?] she is keeping in good helth [health?] wishing the famly [family?] the same not forgetting Willie John Hay hopping [hoping?] he is a good boy [&?] tell James Campbell I was asking for him very Kindly how is he getting Along please tell him I will send him a letter as long as the boyne water before long.
