Drennan [Belfast?] From: 418 Antoine St. Montreal 22 Nov[ember?] 1878 My Dear Doctor I was very glad indeed to receive your letter of 31 Ulto [Ultimo?] - I was pretty sure that you would approve of my views on Orangism [Orangeism?] which is a curse to any country. Only think of the impudence of a set of Orange women here not one of whom is known in society starting a female lodge & calling it after the Princess Louise! The Catholics are a bad lot too. The organ here is [brewing?] the worst spirit in fact it is hard to decide which is the worst - I have read attentively your remarks on the "Crown & Cabinet" question, but it has two phases. Dr Drennan 1st The relations between the Crown & Cabinet and 2d [2nd?] The relations between the Crown & Cabinet acting in concert and the [?]. The latter is what you specialy [specially?] refer to and the difficulty arises Chiefly with reference to foreign policy and more especially when there is a question as to a casus belus [causus bellus?]. It strikes one that there is a great difficulty in the latter case for I feel the importance when we have diplomatic relations with such powers as Russia that it is very important that the nation should as much as possible appear as much as possible to be united, although in fact it never will be So [?] what you feel as your difficulty hardly exists with us as we have no foreign policy. Our [point?] in Quebec was whether the Ministers could ignore the position of the Dr Governor who represents the monarchical element in our consitution. I think it on by ground undesirable that Ministers should be prevented to act without reference to the D Governor or in England to [?] Sovereign - We are threatened into the dismissal of the D Governor of Quebec and I am sure that if Lord Lorne has to consent he will do so most reluctantly and moreover have to acknowledge by doing so that his own Ministers may act without consultation. The new fruit of her Dominion is opposed to the Quebec administration & anxious to overthrow it and most partyies [parties?] - are rabid to get the D. Goveror removed altogether theoretically he is irresponsible for his acts for which his ministers avow him responsiblity - a week or two will tell. The Marquis & Princess are hourly expected at Halifax - Before you get this the Castle will have given you news of the reception here - Matilda Hereford is going to winter at Clifton. no one here that I know of is interested in the city of Glasgow Bank - I could not recommend [?] [?] of Canada for [investment?] at present. [?] [case?] exceed the depression - I have had two large double teeth extracted this morning & under the influence of laughing gas felt no pain but had a disagreeable dream kind regards to all.
