Transcript | From J. [John?] L. Inglis Phoenix Mills Madison Florida Nov [November?]: 13th 1877 Roland Redmond Esq. N.J. [New Jersey?] Dear Sir I find in my return home from N.J. [New Jersey?] from of Oct. 18. I take pleasure in finding you what little information I can, as a friend of Mr. Lawtry I know the plantation you refer to; it has him from [considered?] what we call a No.1 [number one?] place here, it is too large for this now [----?] of things, & wd [would?] not make my [--------?] small farm on account of the absence of water in the place, it [---?] quite an important thing & have water or ponds or small lakes on account of keeping stock. When was a good dwelling on the place, but what condition it is now I cannot say, as I have not been on the place for some years, but I pass it now, from [------?] so [---?], as only to pay taxes that the place is in a poor condition, I would advise you to sell it out in small farms, say 200 or 300 acres to a man. No one I know of here, wishes to purchase so large a place, but as the place was once rationed highly (on account of the large [premises?]) the taxes must be too much, that is the place has been assessed at some figures now as it was. When the dwelling was in good order but it surely, if properly managed should bring from in rent, than the taxes. I understand the place once sold for $10,000 I have no idea it would now bring one one third of that figures, but I as an owner of a large amount of Real Estate in this County, and who has suffered much by its fall in value feel that it has seen its lowest figures, and it will advance, as Florida is better known Anything I can do for you in this matter I will do so with pleasure Yours truly John L. Inglis. |
