| Transcript | To; Thomas Greer Dungannon, Ireland From: John James, Philadelphia, [U.S.A.?] 12/20 1783 Philad [Philadelphia?] 12 mo [month?] 20 Dear Friend 1783 Thomas Greer I write thee on the 9th Inst by our much esteemed Friends Patience Brayton & Rebeccah Wright by the way of Dublin who are gone a Religious Visit to the Churches on your side the Water This is intended by the Ship Hope Captain Benezet by whom my friend Jacob Shoemacher jun [junior?] has ship'd 18 hho[-?] Flaxseed to thy address I was not certain thou Recd [Received?] Consignment of this kind but as we were unacquainted with Persons in the North thought thou could put it in such hands that might be suitable if it was not in thy way. I informed thee in my last that we had entered a Partnership under the firm of James & Shoemacher purposing to lay ourselves out for the Comm[erce?] business, We have got a good [torn] for the selling linnens [linens?] and other dry Goods also for the purchasing of Flaxseed having a large acquantance [acquaintance?] in the Country think we could do a good deal to advantage so that we should be pleased to have thy Interest in promoting us in this or any other way if thou finds freedom, as thy acquaintance must be large and influence great among Friends and others. I think thou may depend on our care in the execution of orders__I was pretty largely concerned in trade in Charlestown before the Troubles commenc'd but found it most safe to make a retreat soon after my Return from England in 1775 and have continued out of business ever since until lately and should have been willing to have continued so, but my hopes have been great as well as thousands of others on the Continent Yet I hope it has been a day of profit in another sense to many the consideration of which makes me I dare not complain but endeavour to get an honest living by future Industry and as I have a pretty large acquaintance abroad and am solicited by some to go into this Way that we have purposed feeling in my own Mind to join in with it and make tryal [trial?] I remain with love and near affection thy Friend John James P.S. We should be pleased thou would propose some suitable Persons in the different Seaports in the North in case we should want a Correspondent hereafter also thy Propect of Flax Seed answering next Season |
