| Transcript | Dec, 13th, 1817 My Dear cousin I need not only attempt to form an apology for my gross neglect in not writing to you before this time, but simply ask that you will not judge me as feeling unfriendly, for that I do not, and your kind remembrance of me from time to time forbids that a few days ago I was greatly delighted & surprised upon receiving a call from your son Sandy, I did not at first know him, but his features soon became familiar. I regret very much that we could not have had more of his company but there was so much and so many to be seen that he had to make the best of the short pace of time he had. He appeared to enjoy his trip very much. I hope before this reaches you - you wil have much news from himself in person. I saw him on board the China last Wednesday morning - Since which time the weather has been delightful with us - I was glad to hear from S. that you were enjoying such good health that together with pleasant Surroundings & associations such as you have goes far toward making life pleasant and when in connection with this (as no doubt if is with you) there is a looking forward to a bright and glorious immortality, where all is joy & peace through an unending eternity then one may say for me to depart and be with Christ is far better - your life dear friend has been one of activity in the cause of maker and for all such reward not of merit but of grace is certain & hence the language of the Apostle - I have fought the good fight I have finished my course. I have kept the faith and henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness may it be yours & mine to wear that Diadem. The last three years have made a great change in our family. Four of my sis ters, Mary Ann, Elenor, Matilda & Eliza have been removed by death. There is now left out of eleven of a family only Anna and Myself. Anna with her family are living in Brooklyn across the river from us and is in the enjoy- ment of good health - my own health has been much better these last few years for which I feel grateful to a kind providence. Mrs M. is greatly blessed with health & vigour of body. My boys are both employed, but the remuneration for services rendered is not as good here as it was some years ago. Business in all departments has been for a long time and continues to be much depressed and I cannot perceive an innactiate prospect of revival. The President and Congress are not working very harmonicaubly which does not help matters any. Sandy tells me you have some thoughts of makeing a visit to the country. I do think you would enjoy it very much & it would afford me much pleasure to see you more hoping that you are well and that Sandy is well back, with kindest regards & all the family from yours truly J.
