| Transcript | Portadown 4th April 1831 Dear Brother It has given us much satisfaction to hear by Sister Browns letter from you, of your safe arrival at your own place and that through divine mercy you found your family all well We are thankful to say we and ours are in good health with the exception of occasional colds & which are conty. [contrary?] to children- Our sister Brown s health was at a very low ebb through the course of the winter from a severe cold accompanied with Rheumatism but at present thank God is quite recovered - Her daughter Hanna Jane was also ill from cold, indeed so ill there. her recovery was nothin problematical, but at present she is much better - you may be surprised to hear that little Wm [William?] Searight after about 6 day illness from water on the Chest died about the beginning of January - Our Sister Fletcher and her family are well- her Son Wm [William?] Brown got married in the month of Decr. [December?] last to Miss / daughter of James / McCann of Richmount - our Uncle Hu [Hugh?] Lockhart of Clare died in the month of February last seemingly without any cause more than the ordinary course of nature - his son Thomas if not gone is about to leave this country for Philadelphia - the other friends in that neighbourhood are well - Jos [Joseph?] Malcomson & his wife & Wm. [William?] Ferris & his are all well, but our Ant [Aunt?] Dodson is very ill & was hardly expected to recover about for 8 days ago - as to our own business affairs we may inform you that [Hfd?] has nearly closed the bargain for the Corner Strand with Mr R Atkinson. it being left to two men they agreed that the purchase money should be 475 - but Mr A [Atkinson?] went and lifted Memorandum before signing and kept it about a week without it being prefected in which interval we thought better to have nothing to do with it at so much money But we have taken the House above over from Mr Paul and are about to take it down and build a good Three Story House on the stand of it and a part of our own The numbers that are leaving this Country and neighbourhood for America surpasses any thing we have ever seen before - The prices of our markets as some what as follows . Flour 1 st [stone?] 23/- 2nd - 20/- = 3rd - 10/- = fourth 12/- pCwt [per Hundredweight?] - Oatmeal for 15/- to 16/- = Oats 9/- to 10/- Wheat from 13/- to 16/- Potatoes from 2/- to 2/6- pCwt [per hundredweight?] - Bacon 46/- to 47/6 = Beef 40/- to 55/- Butter 10 s to 11/- perlb Having said so much about this world we should not forget the next - we are striving (as it regards ourselves ) to use this world so as not [to?] abuse it, indeavouring [endeavouring?] to make it a [Torn] next & I hope better- Dear Brother we hope you are "striving to enter in at the strait Gate" - Knowing that broad is the way that leadeth to destruction & Repentance towards God and Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ which brings pardon and Holiness seems to be the plain Scriptural way of escaping all the evil consequences of sin & securing all the blessings of an endless life - however the life will show when this principall [principle?] dwells within - may you and us with all that pertain to us be the subjects of Mercy in time & of Glory in eternity Prays Your Brother & Sister - [Hfd?] & Ha [Hannah?] Montgomery Mr Joseph Malcomson No 255 Grace Street Philadelphia America |
