Tyrone Ireland Messrs Mayers and Consoul – Gentlemen I am enclosing you some papers relative to a claim against the United States Government by my husband Dr. Andrew W. Smyth - which claim I would like you to undertake to see through Congress upon a contingent fee of which kindly let me know the amount you would be willing to take. Senator McEnery has promised to introduce the bill to the Senate - I quote from his letter on the question - "Relative to the claim of Dr. Smyth as against the Government, it is surely an equitable one. Congress has granted relief in many cases less meretricious. If Mr. Lemle will send me a bill or the facts necessary to frame a bill, I will introduce it to the Senate. It will afford me great pleasure to do what I can to have Dr. Smyth reimbursed." - The papers I enclose will give you an idea of the matter at issue - the length of time that has elapsed since Dr. Smyth was unjustly made to suffer for another man's guilt - his personal merits for recognition from the country of his adoption - and the suffering to himself and his family entailed by the injustice for which we beg relief - Hoping for an early [reply?] as to the advice & the amount of the contingent fee you will accept I am Yours sincerely ------ |
