Dec [December?] 20 1888 My dearest Uncle As I was presented writing Christmas letters I must write now to wish you all at Hazelbank & the Rectory, a happy new year - If you dont feel like writing in answer, perhaps Lydia will write me a little letter & tell me how you all are. I was vey much disappointed at not being able to go & see you again - John was so anxious to get home after seeing D. Ogly in Scotland, indeed he had to get home at once, so we took the first ship we could get - we could not get a passage by one of the Allen line for several weeks. John & I talked of going over to Belfast & coming back to Scotland, but they did not seem to think it would do, as the time was so short - I believe John sent you a Toronto "Mail" lately, you would be interested in reading the account of our little town - I am sorry John's portrait was so very bad. The others were very good - however he is going to send, or has sent you a good photo to show that he has not changed much he is very well indeed I have never known him to be better - Our boys have all come home for the holidays - the three boys arrived last night - the eldest boy Rob is not going to school now, he is junior clerk in the Bank of Toronto here - Stafford is very anxious to go into his father's office - probably he will do so - I saw in one of the papers this week that Minnie Garratt has a daughter - she is very comfortably settled in Kingston - When D. Ogly came out by the "Et[?]ia" a few weeks ago he found George Kirkpatrick R.E. [Royal Engineers?] was on board. I have not heard when his leave expires - We expect Willie Kirkpatrick to pay us a little visit - he is very fond of coming to Petrolia & we all like him very much, We had a visit from Charlie Forster this week he lunched with us - he was spending a day or two with his brother-in-law Mr Morris - We have no clergyman yet - Mr de [Lorn?] of whom we were all so fond could not return - on account of his wifes health - Last week my time was taken up preparing for a little bazaar - we very seldom have one here - it was most successful - we never have raffles or any thing of the kind - we have an active organization here called the Church woman's Association - The Jenkins family are all well all the girls are at home - please tell Geraldine I am very much pleased with Bessie Gregg, she arrived November 1st she is so fond of cold weather I dont think she will be able to stand the summer here - John joins me in love to you & the family - I hope to send you a family group when we have a new one taken - now dear uncle hoping to hear soon that you are all well ever your very affectionate niece Helen M.
