Dear Friend
Having been informed by my Friend John
Reynell that thou ha'st sometimes supplied him with Linins [Linens?]
and that thou art able and willing to Serve thy Friends here in
purchasing them on the most advantageous Terms, I herewith send thee a
list of an assortment of 225 pieces which I desire thee to purchase and
send me as soon as may be, and for the Cost thereof draw Bills on David
and John Barclays of London whom I shall direct to pay thee the amount
of these Goods.
I intended to have sent for them some Months since but have delayed
it somewhat unseasonably, as the having them early in the Spring would
be a considerable advantage which I now fear we shall lose, My youngest
Son Charles is now about Settling and entering into Trade and I intend
them for him as he hath been brought up to this Branch of Business,
and I hope he may conduct so as to become an agreeable Correspondent, if
thou shouldst incline to continue in this Employment, As the Bounty
allowed in Great Britain reduces the price of the low priced Linens
much, these must come by way of Bristol or Liverpool; to the
latter Port I suppose there are most [more?] Conveyances. If they could be
Shipped at Belfast, Newry, Dublin or Londonderry in any Ship coming
hither by way of that port, it would be best as one Insurance would be
sufficient, for which way soever they come I would have D & J Barclay
informed and desired to insure the full value of them At Liverpool
Richard Hillary and John Scott were my Correspondents formerly, I
understand they are not now in partnership so thou mayest send to either
of them, desiring them in like manner to the case of Launcelot
Cooper. Such of them as are not entitled to a Bounty by coming by way
of England I choose to have sent directly hither by first vessel either
from Newry, Belfast, Dublin or Londonderry, as the risk will be less and
they may be sufficient to pay the Charges - I rely on thy care in the
purchasing them well and finding them soon, by which thou will encourage
a future Correspondence.
It will afford me real pleasure to hear there's some
appearance of the prosperity of Truth in your Kingdom, it is now
upwards of 34 years since I was there, at that time there were some
worthy friends living who have since been removed, I have often heard
heard [sic] with concern that the places of many of them were vacant,
which is occasion of mourning, but alas, it is the State of too many
other places where Truth formerly prospered. In this province and New
Jersey it is too evident there are many proofs of great Declension
yet we have Cause with thankfulness to acknowledge there
is a great number of such who have the Cause of Truth at Heart, and
manifest it by their Lives and Conduct - It hath been, and is a time of
Commotion through these Colonies, many under a profession of maintaining
our Liberties having acted very imprudently, but the people here have not
gone into so great Excesses as in some other places to which there's
Reason to think the Care of Friends hath contributed, by advising &
restraining as far as they could, and we hope their endeavours have
been & will be blessed with Success.
John Turner is I think the only Friend I know in
your part of the Kingdom, when thou hast Opportunity remember
me affectionately to him, I much desire his preservation to the End.
With much Love I am
Thy real Friend
