| Transcript | Chenbanse, Illinois, July 5th 1887. Dear Cousin; Please pardon me for not writing before. I will try and make up now. All our friends here are well at present and things are moving along smoothly. Now for a little family history. Uncle Wm's [William's?] family occupy 3 different Cities viz. Chicago Mary A. Detroit S.J. and Cleveland Joseph. Characteristic of America. Joseph as you doubtless know was married over a year ago and is perfectly happy. Uncle Joseph's family are in different States. Cousin Sarah Thomson is in Kansas but not doing very well, her husband drinks, and the genuine Yankees despise a drinker. Mr. Thomson an American by birth as is all our cousins-in-law with the exception of Cousin James's better half who boasts of German birth. Amelia Geopper was her maiden name. She is a model wife and great worker also rich. her Uncle Michael Butts is one of the richest men in Kankakee County. We got a letter from Cousin Jane Kennedy who is in Wisconsin Attendant in an Asylum there. She is dragging out an existence, but Dear Cousin what must life be away from all one's friends. I know it is hard to get along in Ireland but think of the Associations Why it thrills me yet when I think of the happy times I had and witnessed in Mullaglass [Mullaghglasss?]. Nothing on earth is so beautiful as true piety lived. This is an interesting Country. All is life motion and go ahead too often is principle bartered for this world's allurements but I trust the memory of the Covenanters from whom we are descended if nothing else will prove an anchor to us. I am not clear on the most important subject of all, am hoping, praying, but like Luther before his conversion lack Faith pray for me. We attend Church in Chebense the Congregational similar to the Presbyterian. We have a young Scotchman David Kirkpatrick for pastor. He is very deep and Mother and the rest attend, with the exception of Father who has become a settled stay-at-home. We are glad to hear of your sisters and families. Give my love to all.
