| Transcript | ... you said your letter once that I should try to get James Duffy to live with me as he was a good boy I did try to get him last year when Joseph went to Chicago I sent after him two or three times for I was not able to go myself but he never thought worth his while to come to see me or know what I wanted nor did he once come to see me or ask after me he is one of these Irish Robberheads or properly [papist?] that unless I was one of them I am of no consequence My brother Joseph wonders many a time how you put up with his ignorance I got a black boy as good as him for half what I would have given him but he is not with me now he left to go home to his father in Maryland he was a slave before the war he learned to read & write while with me you say that sister wonders if I will ever go back to Ireland again I will say my intention was to go this fall but my fall prevents it this year and then I laid the money in land but if all things prospers with me and god willing next year I may go Mrs Frost has no family yet nor any appearance of any the woman [women?] dont breed here as the [they?] do there I am happy to hear of Roberts increase but would be more so if a son although sones [sons?] is not always the best My own is not the best child I have but he is considerably improved since he came back Sarah being at home has quite an in fluence [influence?] on him Mary Ann and her man is comfortable he is in a situation at 70 dollars a month and expects soon to get 100 Sarah is on a visit with her at present She wants me to go and live with her but I will not I was expecting a letter from Robert before this but I suppose he is like myself not liking to begin it gave [give?] my best wishes to both mother and him and wife and sister Jane Husband & family and any one [anyone?] that thinks worth while to remember me you may tell my mother that Brother Joseph never was so well off as at present he is doeing [doing?] first rate and saving money Jane & Sarah is living from home each has 100 dollars a year and he has 15 dollars a week at his trade and he is out nothing only for groceries for he raises as much off what lots he has in town a keeps him and he has 4 cows he had one died this year with some disease that prevailed in [Chebanse?] I dont think of any thing [anything?] more that would be be [sic] of any consequence to you at present I remain as ever your affectionate Brother William Porter |
