| Transcript | Bloomfield May 6th 1868 Dear Brother & Sister I rec'd [received?] your letter since [some?] time ago and calculated to answer it but the pressure of business kept me from it If business had @ been good I would have time but as all business is so dull it requires every nerve to be taxed to keep going. I do not know what we are coming to in this country all things is past all comprehension you would scarcely believe it when I tell you potatoes is 12/6 british beef 18 to 20d per lb [pound?] flour œ2/10 for 100 [--?] and 6d per qt [quarter?] for Milk Servant girls where they @ can get a place are getting œ2:10 per month. God only knows what things are coming to it Seems that the people here are going crazy in all things When you write me again and I hope that it will not be long that you write give me full details of how many children Susanna Frs, & [L----?] has, I hope that you are all well we are all pretty well with the exception of Nancy. She is dreadfully troubled with rheumatism Anny is in Florida Joseph lives in Bloomfield goes to New York every day at 6 1/2 O'Clock am, gets home at 7 o'Clock pm go at 6 1/2 leaves New York 5 oc [o'clock?] gets home at 6 oc [o'clock] PM We have had 20 weeks of snow this winter and in our Section of country no one has any [?] in circulation we have dollar bills and $20 50 & 100 and their actual value is 60 cents in place of 100 cts [cents] for change we have 50 cent 25 & 10c and 5 cent [S-----?] [p-----?] of paper money this is what makes business so dull the Farmers are the only ones that are getting along as they get such exorbitant prices for all kinds of produce, I got an offer for my place of $2000 and I sold it, it cost more when I bought it when [-------?] was out her $135. I had 2 acres house and board, I will live in it till the first of next Aug [August?] 1869 rent free and has no wages to pay I am going to buy @ place and build @ new house the house that we sold is old and if I make as much on the one that I buy as the one I sold I will be contented the land that I saw about buying is Indian hill about 200 yds [yards?] South of my old place Lucas knows where it is, I must tell you some of our domestic afairs [affairs?] I expect Sarah will be married before this reaches you She weds a young man of the name of Horace Dodd he has all his furniture bought he is a carpenter by trade industrious sober and @ noble workman he is 23 years of age he was in the war volunteered when 17 years of age and came home without a scratch Lucas knows who his father Mr. Dodd who keeps the boot and Shoe store and post office as you go to the Presbyterian Church from where we live we must conclude as we have nothing more to tell you that would interest you as you do not know the place, it is [---?] so wish me as I can remember all old scenes in Antrim therefore write and let me know of all changes, May the Lord bless and preserve you in health and hapiness [happiness?] Your affectionate Brother & Sister Jas A & A Reford May 10th My birthday was yesterday |
