| Transcript | Vitali's Hotel Cimiez Monday 15th May 1876 My Dear Willy, You would learn from mine[?] of the 4th [Inst to J & B Y.?] my plans and intended movements. I don't think I would write you to day were it not to congratulate you and your much better half on the happy event announced in yours of the 3 Inst: and which I received on the 7th. I trust most sincerely that the promise of "a good recovery" has been fully realized and that Jane is now quite well. This is the day I had hoped upon to leave Lois and proceed Northwards and likely [-in?] "Aix les bains Savoy" to which place Mr Stott wrote me he was getting ready to start for and expected to lead on 9th Inst a second letter from him told me he had got cold and postponed for a few days his departure-since nothing from him-presume he thinks I have left this region, as he would not know till [until?] he reaches Paris that I could not leave here before 15th. I am now between "a swithor + a swist" as to whether I return for "Marseilles" or "Aix les bains", I would prefer the latter with the chance of seeing Stott, but I am somewhat afraid of possible cold weather at Turin and at the Mount Anis Tunnel which [latter?] I should have to pass through-I shall have to decide in a day or two -The weather here is quite mild Thermo [thermometer?] in my room about 65 night and day-but there is Rain every two or three days-in fact the weather has been "broken" for nearly two months. There has been some rain today and it looks as though there could be more - I am heartily[?] tired of this place and am sure a change would be of service unless it were too great. Only think 6 months and two days [down?] in "these diggings". The hotel was enlivened to day [today?] by a wedding party which breakfasted here. I went to the Church, Roman, at 9 am to see the ceremony never having seen one, but the goodfolks were not punctual and finding the church chilly after waiting ten minutes I left- others waited an hour- a long Ceremony & long discourse in Italian, which "did not [pay?]" and I'm glad I left. I was in Nice two days ago it looked deserted of the many hotels not even four or five are open- closed doors and closed windows everywhere this house closes at the end of the week, I believe. Nearly everyone is leaving-our table D'Hote only thirteen, recollect the widows of three husbands at Harrogate, we had got as low as 6, five old ladies and one old Gent, and a jolly party?! The Spring here is very backward fully a fortnight or three weeks Although I should very much like to have a line from you to tell me how Jane and the young gentleman are I don't fairly know where to ask you to address it. The accounts I see of the weather to the Northward is "fine" with cold East winds-With best love to Jane and the young folk.
