" Wm Young 18,490.72 ----------- $28,490.72 ---------- ________________________________________________________ Nov 9th 1878 My dear Willie, I have your note of the 25th since writing you on the 18th ult and of course can add little more to the thanks already expressed to you for your very generous gift of the $10,000. I give you at head the figures of the closing of poor Cousin Rowlands a/c on our books. The dates of the remittances are very satisfactory. The gold ban [?] clause I do not exactly comprehend. Do you wish me to consider the balance as gold, and if anything should cause the price of gold to advance, to be indebted to you for the difference? I ask this to know definitely the position as I would rether pay something now and secure the gold, than to run the risk of an advance. The Zinc Co have received some overtures from the other side, looking towards a compromise. I don't know exactly what as the board will not of course state. The Glasgow Bank failure is disgraceful enough There is one consolation that the guilty will be severely punished and not get off as easily as rescally directors do on our side of the water. But this is after all a small comfort to the thousands who have been utterly ruined by the crash. Mr Pillot returned to Florida some ten days since and I hope soon to hear from him regarding the plantation The tenant has not answered my letter.
