| Transcript | To: William Young Fenaghy [County Antrim?] From: New York June 4, 1861. "Persin" My Dear Nephew, I have your favour of 18th inst I think I have got to the extent of my losses. The gross amount reaches $34m It is hard to estimate the ultimate loss so much depends on the length of the war. I should say that my loss will not be over half & an early settlement of the war may make it less. My belief is that this war will be ended in this year. The evidence is indisputable that the secession has been sprung in all the states by an unprincipalled [unprincipled?] oligarchy for their own selfish ends in opposition to a majority of the people of every seceded State except perhaps of South Carolina & in my opinion the people of their own States will hang the traitors before six months are over. The good & loyal people of the seceded States have been deceived & betrayed by them & they will hold them to a bloody reckoning. The present energy of the Federal government will soon bring things right. The Course pursued by the British Gov------t [Government?] has created a bitter feeling of resentment here & if preserved in a war between the two countries will be the result. I look for a change of policy however when your Government gets better posted up as to the true State of things on this side. I enquire at the [?] last week how they were doing. The secretary told me that their capital was good but that they were doing much less business. #PAGE 2 All the Coastwise risques [risks?] are terminated since the blockade of the Southern parts & this was a large branch of their business. The [?]ssels from Europe too are bring [?] no cargoes. There is no sale [?] Stock at present. Virginia bs [bonds?] sold yesterday from 45 1/4 @ 48 with large sales. North Carolina's sold at 52 Tennessees at 40 1/2. I would rather buy either of them at the price than Virginias. I don't know how the debt of the Confederated States will be apportioned but I lay much strip in that increased obligation. New Jersey Central 1st Mortgage bonds sell at about 101 1/2 @ 102 1/2. The Virginia bonds are however about your limits. I have bonds I could use for yours in case the execution of your order had been praticable. My son Gould goes passenger by this vessel accompanied by a young man of his own age a relative Mr Lydig. [?] propose landing at Queenston [Queenstown?] visiting the lakes of Kilarney & Dublin on their way North.
