| Transcript | To: James Young Esqre [esquire?] Ballymena Ireland From: New York 14th Octr [October?] 1836. Dear James Your letter of 12th Ult I received yesterday. I had heard through Rowland of poor little Jane's illness & was glad to hear from you that she was better. I was under the impression that I had mentioned in my letter to you that I thought my absence had caused me a loss or was likely to cost me $5000. this I did not consider a very serious matter & I regret to [?] that you [?] in it differently. It would be a source of infinite satisfaction to me if you could be satisfied that every dollar in my hands will be as quickly as I can turn it into money & placed in yours. - that is as quickly as it can be done without my paying too dearly for it as I cannot nor will not pay among all my Commissions in usurious Interest. I have never yet paid more than legal interest & will not pay it. I have received from you since 1st Jany [January?] including the [previous?] ten Boxes on board the Echo to Land to day 64.702:9.6. I have remitted you since then 38000 & have placed at your disposal 10000 min [minimum?] by credit in Thos [Thomas?] Wilson & Coy [Company?] which must cover when you draw on them for it. From the [?] Cys [Company's] I have red [received?] in your account $40.791.66 & I shall owe you probably $14000 for burnt Goods; less bal [balance?] as your debit with me on 31st Decr [December?] last say $4.965.22 Now I will venture to say that not a House in the City that ever had your goods placed [?] in funds in proportion to the business better than this & you [now had?] an agent who has had your business when money was half so difficult to procure. I may say that the Banks no longer discount I keep account with four & my whole discts [discounts?] are not twenty thousand Dollars from all of them. I was unfortunate enough to lose most of my Capital last year but I am rapidly regaining it. There #PAGE 2 is now at the Credit of Commission a/c [account?] $15.966 there has been one bad debt made of $1171.74 Mr Macfarlane will [owe me?] from four to five thousand Dollars which he states that he will have means to pay. There is nothing in this to create alarm nor to [?], in the loss of ten times the amount by me but as you feel, I am glad that you have determined to curtail your shipments as in the present state of the money market (with 2 1/2 & 3 1/2 per ct [cent?] a month) it is unpleasant to feel the necessity of making remittances. So soon as I know that you have used my Credit on Messrs [?] Wilson & Co [Company?] for 10.000 I will send you another Credit - this is the cheapest way that I can remit & better than paying for bills h[?], paying for them with paper. I have been proposing [?]ules [P--tul?] stuffs thinking that they could be replaced but shall now hold for higher prices & to keep something to supply my customers. I have made up the Sterling cost of the Goods in St[?] as you will see by the letter to the House amts [amounts?] to 27.443.6. Now were I to fail to morrow how could you lose anything for you would be in my debt & not I in yours. The Goods on hand of course belong to you & would not go into my Estate by the law of this State. I merely state this is to show you how groundless your fears are about the safety of your property. If your object has been to urge me to remit I can only say that I do so as far as I dare for my own safety here for as I have already mentioned to you I cannot depend upon the Banks for discts [discounts?] WR |
