| Transcript | Newburgh July 13th 1849 Dear Fanny I take this opportunity of writing to you hoping you are all in good [health?] as I am at present thank God for all his mercies I was with James from I landed to the 10th of July Hugh and I went to Philadelphia we could not fall in there we came back to N. York went from that to pattens and from that to Newburgh where we fell into work with the farmer I got 15 dollars by month and board Its 2d per D [Day?] British Hugh has 3"6 per day British We dont like this country very well I think as soon as possible we will come home to old Ireland again the [there?] are plenty going about here can get nothing to do James is not as well as he reported he has no Mill he is working in a paper Mill at 1000 a year he has a house and about 2 acres of land and 2 cows I cannot tell whether it is his own or not you need not believe the one half of what you hear there is no constant work here what you earn in the summer you spend it in the winter I do not recommend any one to come here if the [they?] can live anyway at all at home the [there?] are a great many difficulties to encounter here the people makes [make?] a decent living but no more if the [they?] take my advice the [they?] will not come out here the heat is so great that the sun will strike them dead in one minute again the count [counting?] everything the [they?] can live as well in Ireland as here James Wife is a very unpleasant kind of a woman she takes the histericks [hysterics?] she minds me very much of Mary Russel which she takes her tantrums I think be [by?] all accounts she was very angry about him sending you the money no body belonging to him has any business there and [as?] for Mrs Gibb Give my love to her for not to think of coming out here or no one belonging to her for the over half of the [them?] it is coming can get nothing to do the [there?] were nearly tooo [two?] thousand landed in York [New York?] in one week the people is [are?] never free from disorder here the colera [cholera?] is very bad at present here I would like to know how the potatoes is [are ?] doing in Ireland the [there?] are no spoil in the potatoes here yed [yet?] be sure and tell Mrs Gill the particulars I have not time to write any mor [more?] at present may the Lord bless you all amen I remain your affectionate Brother Give my love to all my enquiring friends Lewis Reford When you write direct to the care of Peter Brady front [Hull?], Newburgh Orange County York State [New York State?] |
