My Dear Father:-
I posted you a
copy of the NY [New York?] Sun a couple
of days ago, but you may not
recieve it before this as I was
unlucky enough to just miss
the mail. I wrote Tom & Bill
last week or so & have had
nothing of importance
happen to me since. I am
still in the same position
with the Co [Company?] which prints the
the (sic) NY. [New York?] City directory. I am
looking out for a better job
& have had two offers lately
but the wages were not
high enough to induce
me to make the change
I am in good health &
spirits & am determined to
get along. My present
job is not by any means a
bad one but I can do better
I believe. Business on the
whole is very good but the
keen competition & too abundant
labor drives wages down
while the cost of living
decently remains the same
all you folks seem
to be getting along nicely
I am very glad to see.
How is little Bertie?
Perhaps she is big now
She must let me have
that photograph as
soon as possible
Why not get your own
#PAGE 2
taken & send me one
If you do I'll get myself
"took" & exchange.
This war with Spain was
a great joke for the
Americans. of course
"we" did not have
to extend ourselves at
all to win. There is
skating on nearby
lakes here now I see by
the papers. I hope the
Local Govt [Government?] Bill will
not affect you adversely.
There shd [should?] be some job
in connection with it
that you or Tom wd [would?]
fit in for.
You ought to have quite
a "pull" which is American
for influence. I give [gave?] up
the use of tobacco a couple
of months ago so that now
I neither drink, smoke
nor chew & I feel in much
better health in consequence.
I have not written
this letter for any other
reason than to make
you write if you have
not already done so.
Dont forget the photos.
Love & good wishes to
all.
your affectionate Son
J D Reid
