My Dear Father,
Your last letter is dated
14. Procrastination is more the cause of my delay
in replying than neglect. I have had a letter half
written on two occasions. I am still with the
Directory people here. It is a grand thing that you
should still be strong & healthy. I hope you
came out all right with the Local Govt [Government?] on your
Compensation claim & that Sam has been able
to hold his position alright. Where is Bertie
now & what is she doing? When you write
next tell me where Bertie & the boys are
located as of course I dont know now
I hope Bertie is home again to cheer you
in your loneliness. When I start writing
to you & get to thinking about the past I get
the blues bad altho' [although?] on the whole I
have a good deal to be thankful for & am
in good health with the exception of an
occasional attack of indigestion. on a/c [account?] of
the indigestion I have not used tobacco at
all (in any form) for the past two months
& I intend to keep from it as well as the
drink. I see by the paper that affairs in
South Africa are taking a more favourable
turn from the British point of view. It seems
the Govt [Government?] has always underrated the Boers.
There are some points of similarity between their
fight for liberty & that of the American
Colonies 1776. Opinion here is divided
on the merits of the case, altho' [although?], feeling runs
more in favor of England than it ever did
but there is always the Irish element to
be reckoned with & they are large & powerful
in politics. Tell Bertie if she sends me
her photo I will send her one of my
girls. That offer ought to fetch her.

How do Robert & Willie get along & have Sam
or Willie been married yet?
Business has been pretty brisk here
but has slackened somewhat owing
to the unusally mild weather so
far. Wd [Would?] it be too much to ask
you to advance me Five Pounds
until I get myself out of a hole. I have
been in debt more or less for some time
past & am just beginning to see daylight
again. If you Cd [Could?] manage this you Wd [Would?]
just about fix me up for the winter.
If not, dont [don't?] mention it but reply
soon & let me know how you
are all getting along & wishing you
all a merry Xmas [Christmas?] & a happy
New Year, I remain
Your affectionate Son
John D Reid

I intend writing again before
Xmas [Christmas?]. If you send the money dont register
the letter. No necessity.
