| Transcript | Litchfield Illinois April 29th 65 [1865?] Dear Mother You will doubtless ere [before?] this have expected a letter from me but I have embraced the earliest oppertiunity [opportunity?] of giving you an account of my travell [travel?] of late and as to where I am at present Upon my leaving Lancaster I went to Cincinnati and stopping there all night, I went in the morning and got paid off my next step was to take a short walk about the city but as it came on to raining I was unexpectedly stopped and made up my mind to go to Indianapolis. As far as I am able to judge Cincinnati is next to Pitsburgh [Pittsburgh?] for filth of any city I have seen in the States, the town is laid out and way the streets neither parrellal [parallel?] nor strait [straight?] [faded] as if they had been built in a great hurry. We will now pass over a few [hours?] which brings me Indianapolis where I stayed all night and took a walk around the city and through some of the shops in the [morning?] but did not ask a job, the city is much cleaner than cin__ [Cincinnati?] and not so closely built in the afternoon I took my departure to the capitol of the Western States Chicago The Noble appearance of the city and lake struck me at once with ashtonishment [astonishment?] was this Chicago it was and well does it deserve to rank as one of the finest cities of the Union So clean such fine Buildings and wide streets and with such a look of comfert [comfort?] and plenty every person you meet in a hurry on some important business go into an hotel all you hear about is business business from morn [morning?] to night And they have without exception the finest [Herd?] of horses I ever saw, but as I cannot do justice to the city in my description of it I will stop. I stayed there a day and night and as you know about my visit to Dixon and [Amboy?] I will tell you where I am at present Litchfield It is a small place and built on the Prairie I am boarding in an hotel at 6 1/2 Dollars per week It is too much and I only intend to stop a month #PAGE 2 And then be off again south If I can get transportation by the government if not I will go east to Cleveland or Buffalo. You will have heard of the Death of Lincoln it is severely felt throughout the states And the day of his burial was observed as a day of [rest?] throughout the Nation.
