| Transcript | West 27th St 145 Fulton Street Brooklyn Feb 1st 1879 Mrs Ellen McIntyre My dear sister five days ago I received the Londonderry Standard and yesterday I recived [received?] Your letter of Jan 9th containing the sorrowful news of dear Brother William's death to me it is A sad and painful bereavement my only Brother. Oh how deeply I Sympathise with you all in this [?] of an all wise providence the Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away and we must look for consolation and rest and lean hard on the extended arm that Christ holds out fulfilled in this Case. I will be A father [?] the [Fatherless?] the [widows?] [?] and the [unreadable] Give my kindest Love to [Mother?] and [?] [?] [?] and say to them that I can enter into their feelings of Loneliness in this bereavement I think no wonder that more exclaimed it cannot be it cannot be till [until?] he has buried me Four days has now passed since I recived [received?] the news paper [newspaper?] and I dont think that the thought of mother and the suddenness of the Death has been out of my mind During the day one minute at A time But I console myself with the confident feeling that mother will be well taken care of as long as God in his providence is pleased to spare her here Myself and family are all in the enjoyment of good health we have all been very healthy last summer and this winter with the exception of some of the children complaining of colds for A few days we have had a severe winter, in frost snow and A number of very severe snow storms extending to all parts of the country Blocking the Railroads and suspending travel for Several days at A time. It has been A severe winter for trade and business #PAGE 2 of every kind [?] Labor and low prices for every kind of commodities It has been very trying on business men [businessmen?] and mechanics. But the impression seems to prevail that we have passed over the worst on the 1st of Jan the Government resumed Specie payment so we are on A good financial basis and are looking forward and hoping for better times Write as soon as possible how mother bears up and all the particulars if any [?] [?] with regard to [-- other?] is regarly [regularly?] her home I presume Mr Sample will continue to work the [torn] it is A [?] [char-?] [?] A Woman but I trust she will be Equal to the task. let me know if Brother felt before his death that he was likely to be taken away and what instruction if any with regard to Mother And also his wife and children With kind love to yourself and Husband and all my friends I Remain Your Affectionate Brother James Sample 964 Myrtle avenue Brooklyn [James?] Semples [Sample's?] direction |
