| Transcript | Muskegon March 24 1872 Dear Mother By this time you will think that in have almost forgotton you i would have wrote sooner but i was waiting on Hugh Glen cumming [coming?] out to i would here [hear?] the news he got to Chicago last Saturday week i was in Chicago last week prearing [preparing?] for spring but Sarah took sick and she sent me a telegram to come home i have been here 5 days and she is getting all right [alright?] again i am for Chicago this evening again, i was over Seeing my old Papi [Pappy?] Coulter this winters the [they?] were all well when i was there and like the american letters dowing [doing?] well the [they?] have got quite a large farm 250 Arces it is 45 miles from Milwaukee, him and the old woman seems to stand the presher [pressure?] of there [their?] years pretty good, we have had a verry [very?] cold long winter here there is 30 inches of ice in muskegon lake that is 30 inches thick this time last winter it was all clear water and navigation was began, I dont think there will be any sailing for 4 weeks yet, we got a judgement against the Propelled lake on account of the collision that you heard about for damages and cost we were allowed $1400 we have not collected it yet but it is all straight we will get it by the time you get this letter, it has been a good winter in the woods the loggers had plenty of snow and it frows [froze?] so that the Swamps were all good to haul on so that the have got in farr [far?] more logs than the [they?] expected to get in when the [they?] went into the woods i think we are gowing [going?] to have a good Season the cumming [coming?] by the prospects! Glenn said that he has a box for us filled with stockings and bedding it was not up from the depot when i left Chicago you wanted to know what about your son Mr Patterson he is working in a Bakery in Chicago William was to see him when i was there he is well and is gowing [going?] to have Nancy & the babies out this Summer he wrought 2 weeks for William & I after he come out but him & I had a growl and he left he then went coocking [cooking?] with Nick and nick wore him to laying up time but he was tired of him there is a good deal of truth in what you said of him that he was like Tom Blair, my cousin Davie [David?] has not been around sience [since?] may last he is another dead beat Bella [Isabella?] and the family were well when i left & william Sarah wants to be remembered to you give my love to Margret [Margaret?] & the family and to William Taylor & wife & ther [there?] care and all the rest of the neighbours i was sorry your ring did not fit good by [goodbye?] P.S. direct Yours & [Be?] Mulkegon Sam Shaw Box 663 Michigan, U.S. |
