Transcript | My dear Vincent, 23. 8. 63 [1863?] In going thro' [through?] my papers here preparatory to my exit on 21st September next I came across the enclosed interesting family documents i.e. (1) Will of Charles Sheals [Shields?] (the General's father, presumably) dated 22nd Jan, [January?] 1810 & (2) Copy Will of James Shields of South Carolina dated 10th Dec, [December?] 1827 They were given to me to keep by my Father shortly before his death. I think you are the proper person to keep them in your "archives" and so enclose them herewith. Cleaning out presses & drawers is an awful business after the accumulation of 40 years. A very distant American relative called on me lately, one John H. Danton whos [whose?] mother was a Shields, a neic [niece?] of Litt[?] Shields & who, he informed me, solemnly & formaly [formally?] renounced the "Romish superstition" in middle life! Hoping Dinah, the family & yourself are all well & flourishing Affectionately, Kevin |
