| Transcript | [Page 1] Castledamph Oct 3rd 1901 Dear Brother A few lines to inform you that we are all in good health since you left & I hope by this time That you all feel well again after your voyage:: We rec [received?] your letters on Tuesday morning glad to get them though there were some tears dropped all the same. Mrs Nelson had one from Mary also the Gortin [Page 2] people I suppose Mary got her fill of the Ocean we were sorry that she was so sick. Lots of people were anxious to hear of your safe arrival It seems lonely around home since you two left and we miss Mary especially on Sundays John says he thinks it odd on Saturday nights when she isn't here when he comes But we must do as well as possible now without her & I hope it will be for her good Mr. & Miss James came on Monday, he was here last night, inquiring about you of course he told Mother that Mary [Page 3] would be foolish for coming back in a hurry: he says she is far better away He could have got a school up at home this time, he says he had a notice written for Mr Stein two or three times & drew back as he was afraid of the other Minister You wanted to know what Mary thought of the voyage & vessel. Well she did not say much how she liked it only she said the beds were dreadful the food was lovely and she praised the dining room She gave a full account of the concerts & she said They [the?] [people?] [&?] all seemed very sociable & kind. The only thing she disliked was the beds: She said the rugs were very [Page 4] useful to her when on deck Good thing that you got them in time Liza wrote to Mary & told her about Charles McCullagh losing Tillie & Henderson’s work there is great rows in all directions. The Miss Houston's Plumbridge has the work now & their tongues is all going . Mrs McCullagh & Miss Dunne is very sorry for giving it up after 47 years indeed its a pity of them at the present time He is getting work from Charles Bayer Derry but it may not be constant& he may lose the workers We tried to send you the pictures but they were too large & wouldn't go so we sent [Page 5] them with Liza Noble I will send you her address so if you dont get them you can write to her she will foward them if possible We didn't like to cut them so we thought best to send them with her . one foot wide is what is allowed from here but they may go from there all right Sorry we hadn't them before you started it would have saved trouble We have hardly any thing but wet weather since you left:: The hay is not in yet & some corn out Through the country Yesterday was Gortin fair Tom & Wm [William?] was over . very bad fair for every thing They had [Page 6] lambs over but sold none sheep is doing bad this season for so far Father & Tom was in Strabane on Tuesday with the pigs they sold Nine & rec [received?] £11 10s sold the first at £1 10s last at £1 5s very good price for young pigs I wish we had some more Did you start teaching when you got there .I suppose you were in time for the fair give all news like this when you write we expect to have another letter from some of you this week I hope Mary wont get homesick Though we are sick enough [Page 7] without her I think there is hardly a night but some of us dreams of her either being home or not away We are sending the song book to day & a few Educational papers inside I hope you get it safe:: We have addressed your letters to Essex but forget the no [number?] of the Box I suppose you will get them without it Have you gained any correspondents by coming home if so you may get all news you should write & they would surely answer I know Mary will have enough anyway Mrs Nelson said she would write to day & miss cole will write also Miss Ashfield & her own friends after that Sam & Alice is quiet now There is no more word about them they have fought the battle who ever won This may do to day as I cant think of anything else your sister Bella M Smyth P.S.
