Castledamph July 26th 1894 Dear Brother In answer to your letter which we received yesterday we are glad to know that you are in good health you want to know all about the 12th July but I think I told you all about it last week only I did not name all the band but I will give you their names this time (first row) James McKelvey David Houston James McKnight Andy McClelland Jamey Gordon Willie Gilkison Bob McKernan our Tommy Jamey Hay Andy J Campbell James Gilkison John Gordon John Houston but he beat one of the small Drums Bob Campbell beat the symbols I think I told you the rest of the drummers in my last letter Willie Barker was not in the band he got a broken wrist about two months ago by the tramp of a horse and it was not right better but he came with them in the evening there is a good deal wanting since you left, Andy Ballantine has left the band altogether he has turned to be a dipper so old Robert McFarland would not allow him to be with a band at all Sandy Houston never appears either nor Bob McKelvey did not come this time I suppose I may tell you the names of the orangemen but it wont [won t?] be ill to do for they are nearly all in the band old James M Knight [McKnight?] Archy McKelvey Glencappagh Alex McKelvey Glengaw Alex Mc Kelvey Glenrone James Campbell Tommy McFarland Daniel Henry William Smyth Tommy Houston and John Gilkison I think this is all the Orangemen that was present that is not in the band we will send you a paper and you will see something about Strabane and other places and you will see a member of this lodge marriage (sic) in it Robert Fleming but he is a bad attender (sic) I will make this do on this subject I think we are for having some good weather now, today looks well we have finished the thinning of the turnips yesterday and they are commencing to mow the meadow today so you may say they have a busy time of it for they would not take time to write as much as a letter We have sold all our wool this year it drew us £3 12s we got [4 3/4d?] per pound in Strabane so there are (sic) always something to be made of the sheep I don t [don t?] know whether we ever told you about Alex Duncan and Joe Elkin joining the Temperance society but they did not keep temperate long Alex is drinking as brisk as ever nearly ever [every?] time that he is out he takes too much so that is the kind of the Temperance here, take the pledge and break it when you like No more at present hoping we shall see you before this time next year Your Sister Bella M Smyth |
