[Page 1] Castledamph March 9th 99 Dear Brother We rec [received?] your letter of Feby 21st on Monday so that leaves us to write this week again. Liza says we should write twice a week and tire you answering them. but we will hardly manage that. I cant say that we are all well. for father is confined to bed this last day or two with a pain in his leg. he has felt it [Page 2] for two months. but he was able to work constant and he thought it would leave without. being any worse. but he cant walk now. so he may not get [rid?] for a while Mary wrote last week and I cant say what she told you as she let noone [no one?] see the letter. She should have told you about the races. that were up the burn, Willie Ballantine and James McNamee were stilling on a moonlight night and were afraid of danger And as usual our Wm [William?] and three others started up [Page 3] at bedtime. They met John McAnulty on Roberts Hill and they [the?] five stood talking for a while The stillers saw them and thought it was police and it was time for them to run so away they went and left all there only the worm When the others got the length it was a total wreck. They gathered them up again and began work a second time and was sorry for loosing [losing?] a charge. Then when they were near finished two of them was away hiding stuff. The one saw the other and gave the alarm of police. Then the [there?] were [sic] a hurry to see who would be first Wm [William?] took the worm and [Page 4] started down the burn. Bob McKernan Jamie Ballantine Bob Warnock followed him and you may guess how many times they fell till they came to our brae. and still thought the police was after them I tell you they were a frightened set I wish you could hear the fun since about the races. and who was best and how hard they ran and no one after They may wait next time till the police comes, and the one wont chase the other Willie Ballantine has a ploughing today so he will give them some of the grog that they were frightened making There was a rhyme made on the party in Sams new [Page 5] house, so quality and all there is some one against them And I believe Dan got [Jallop?] while he was there so there is not much style with that You may be sure that we are in the second class for there is any amount as good as us and were not invited The police got six in James Houston after hours playing cards that night so they were fined £2 6s costs each and himself in £10 so it was costly on him There is a new school to be erected at Gortin and it will be done in good style there is £400 for building it so this country might improve [Page 6] in learning yet, the Gortin Master has got the last chance if he is found drunk again he is done for. So that will be a good place for some one [someone?] unless he watches well Master James spent a week painting his gates and when he was done some one [someone?] tarred them for him. he will have extra bother now There are still tricks like this going on down there but its never found out We have some snow here to day [today?] but not heavy Is this worth a penny B M Smyth [Bella Smyth?] |
