Dear Brother
I think the time
is up for another letter, as
it is more than a fortnight
since the last was wrote
We were looking for one this
last day or two but its not arrived
yet I suppose you are anxious
to see how your exam will go
And I expect you are doing your
best by this time and we hope you
will be successful for the last time
James Houston was telling us about
your letter & the application for
schools

[Page 2]
Neither him nor the old folk
would allow you to have anything to
do with the one on the Island They
think you would be better some other
place Mother was thinking that if
you would nt get a school: you could
stop at Woodslee till Spring & then
come home & try for a situation in
this country: Mr James thinks your
certificate would be no good in this
country but he is not sure
His would hold good in Eng [England?]
Ireland & Scotland He sent you papers some
time ago He & Miss James was [were?] up here
on Sunday
I expect by this time you
have the money order & its likely
you will be glad to see it we may
send you some more in the New Year.
The money is well rid up [sic]

[Page 3]
at present,
Father is just away with the rent
as the Agent came yesterday: And
Young's land was paid on Saturday so
there is not much left They got the
road money on Tuesday £8 each and the
flax is not ready at present.
There is a meeting in Jas [James?]
Houston, Plumbridge, to night [tonight?],
about old [Margrets?] money, father got a
letter to attend I suppose they will lodge
their claim before the time is up Jas'
[James?] Houston "Junr" [Junior?] has got,
all particulars down from 'Carson' so if
there is any chance he will watch it,
as he is pretty greedy
If we happen to get it you may expect a good
order, more than the usual amount
Joe Glenn is busy this last week trying
for a J.P he has been with Herdman
& all big fellows, and writing letters
to the Duke
The Plum [Plumbridge?] Sergeant went

[Page 4]
up to
him & told him to try for it, as there
was one wanted in A Duncan's place & he
was all the man he knew was entitled to
it: So they are fooling Joe & keeping
him running every place & he thinks
they are all in earnest & doing their
best for him Sam Dunne, Master James,
Dr Campbell & a few others delights [sic] in
keeping him going, Joe had a field of
land from Eliza Glass & it was measured
by A P Campbell, Joe thought there was
too much in it so he made the master
measure it, but he measured by a tape
as he was afraid of law, then Eliza
would'nt (sic) have that: Joe had gavenher
[given her?] some things & done something for
her So he have her a "set off" for so much.
£1.6s for the girl making a blouse,
the Master told him to charge £2 as it
was little enough this is the way the
[they?] work him & he knows no better

[Page 5]
We had a letter from Beck Dunbar last
week, inviting us down. so we intend
to go down before Xmas, they
are all well & Mary likes the school
& has a good attendance.
Joe Duncan is not out of the Infirmary
yet; we hear that its not getting
better, it cant be or he would be out
before this Its a pity of him if he loses
the leg.
He wouldnt been [sic] much worse out in South
Africa
The English are getting plenty
to do for so far They will lose plenty
before the [they?] won [win?] We have got no
word from Tommy Hay yet nor [stained] have'nt
[sic] seen the 11th Hussars [mentioned?] either:
but he is likely in Egypt.

[Page 6]
Barney 'fad' has sold the half of his land
to Willie Houston 'Waterside' he & Andy
Ballantine was [were?] in for it but Andy was
beaten, as Barney wanted houston to get it,
Dan Henry & Missus is [are?] going to live to
[in?] George s & [Jama--?] house as Barney wants
theirs so Willie Gilkison will have a tenant
We are sending papers today so Good Bye [Goodbye?]
for the present
Wishing you a merry Xmas & a happy new year
& that you may be successful in your exam
& obtaining a school & try & be good to the
children
Your Sister

Bella M Smyth
