[Page 1] Castledamph February 4th 96 Dear Brother We received your letter on Friday 22nd Jan, I suppose it is time to answer now That programme was from Miss Dunbar is it the one you wanted Bella says she told you who it was from They never say much about the circulars Miss Dunbar took some of them down with her a long time ago. Well John C [Charles?] will not get into no [any?] trouble about the fish Mr Scott will not go on with the case when the fish was dead Dan took out two dead ones since and took them to Elkins I suppose he ate part of them there so you will not have to think of it anymore [Page 2] Well I think it was me marked that story I always like to read all the stories that comes [sic] my way we have not got any books to send to you yet but shortly will You wanted to know if John plays the fiddle well he is a far better and sweeter player nor [than?] Mary he can play any tune Mary has to watch the fingers for two nights before she can play the tune I think I will get a Melodian [melodeon?] before long well I think we have enough instruments between fiddle flute Drums mouth organs, when John goes over them all you would think we had enough one minute at this and another at something else None of our ones was speaking to that McFarland yet he was at Matilda Janes funeral now he was not at any Soiree. [Page 3] James Huston [Houston?] sent a letter to you last week and one to Uncles [sic] I don’t know what [sic] the matter with two of your corrospondents [correspondents?] that is Charles McCullagh and Uncle John Uncl [Uncle?] Charley will write soon I think if you would write to James Campbell aye dear he says he would give you some news. Willie John has not his letter ready yet his examination is this day two weeks Bella is at a [quilting?] in Jonnie [Johnnie?] Warnocks today William Bella me and they [the?] Miss Dunbars Was [sic?] over at the anniversary Temperance Soiree in the Gortin Hall on Tuesday night it was a very good one we were home at twelve oclock pm it did not last long Mr Porter from Omagh and a Boy named Finely [Finlay?] [Page 4] Rev Marshall from Drumquin Rev McFadden Droit and Mr James McMullin [McMullan?] James Houston [Huston?] Eden and Master George K Given gave too [two?] pieces on the vilon [violin?] James Houston [Huston?] told them how Hammy Keagh [Kee?] stooped [stopped?] the whiskey and he gave a song I think he was just as good as any Father Willie Tommy was in Gortin fair yesterday they sold the old horse the [they?] got seven pounds for him Willie John [thinks?] he will soon come back he was vexed when Father came home and said he would never be back more [sic] Joe Gilkison [Gilkinson?] was up home on Sunday he likes Strabane very well he went down on Monday morning again he says he had far more to do in Gortin than what he has to do now [Page 5] Their [There?] was some snow here this last week or more John Charley [John Charles?] was out every day hunting for Rabbits he killed four Tommy two John takes a stick and a long piece of wire with turn [sic] on it so he can catch them in the Rocks Lass is very good for catching them she killed the white one we had in the cage one night it got out so now we have only one yellow it is running about with the hens that [sic] some of what W [Willie?] John was going to tell you in his letter Their [There?] is a great deal of people complaing [complaining?] around here with this cold Dr Connar [Connor?] is improving A Harkness is on Duty again so I think they are all getting better [Page 6] Their [There?] was a man killed in the Butterlope on Monday he is Roddy who works in the limestone quarry he was quarrying out some stones when some above fell on him his leg was broken and [collarbone?] and something else he only spoke two or three words as he was not able he died shortly afterwards he leaves a wife and six Children Mary read your letter two or three times over before she could make out some of them [sic] words they are very hard to make out sometimes We are sending you a paper today you will see David Dunbar is elected rate Collector I will send you a [sic] Almanack [Almanac?] inside paper as we have five of them No more at present Eliza Catherine Smyth Transcribed by Elizabeth Prentice |
