Castledamph March 30th 99 Dear Brother In answer to your letter which we rec [received?] on Monday 20 ult also one today always glad to know you are still in good health Father is getting better again he was up in the garden today with a stick Well we had Lizzie over from Gortin these last ten days Uncle Charles was over on Mon & Tue putting in new windows in the School also a new Door he went home yesterday, so Lizzie had to go with him much against her will she would rather live here than in Gortin. Well in the first place Dan has changed his place of residence as he says Mrs Elkin and him would not concur they are over in Barney (Fads) house Just straight with Elkins nothing but changes in this country one would think last year that this would never come to pass eleven months yesterday since Dan was married and Just look now what changes but none with Mrs Henery There was a wedding party left Dan's today the bride is Annie Wilson and the groom is one of the Henerys [Henry s?] Daniels wife's brother Willie Orrs car came Up with the bride and round to Dans where the groom got his breakfast So off they Drove to Droit to get the Knot tied old Wilson sold his farm so I hear they are coming to Reids old house John Gilkison was down on Saturday but had sad news to tell as his Aunt Tilda was dead she died so suddent [suddenly?] it gave them all a shock she took pains on Wed night and Died on Friday she leaves two girls and Mr Graham behind all her friends went up from here Uncle William has not returned yet. Willie Ballantine has got summoned by they [the?] police for that stilling affair they had one for Jamey (Bob) but he has made his escape to Glascow [Glasgow?] it will learn some of them to Remember the Sabbath Day We hear they [the?] police made another seizure on Sunday last up in Glenlark got one prisoner along with still and [everything?] else some say it will be double fines because it was Sunday in both places. Warnock and old Bob thinks they will take the coat off the plum [Plumbridge?] Sergant [Sergeant?] and McKelvey of Glenroan the Sergants [Sergeant's] name [is?] Burk they are all Catholics in both Barracks except Hamilton who is in Glenrone [Glenroan?] I think you ought to know him as he was in Plumbridge some time ago We had Miss B Dunbar uphere [up here?] on Friday evg [evening?] she was in Mrs Dunns Aughlane (sic) for two weeks just the same old sixpence Lizzie Mary Orr is for America again Friday week also Lizzie Mary Dunn So the young people will soon be all away from this place only their [there?] is always some others getting up to take their place I believe Bella McKernan and Maggie is for going to [too?] shortly Joe Glenn is away about a fortnight [ago?] I dont know if they have got the return yet or not I think he could not agree with old Joe perhaps he may do better abroad Old Wasson and his two Daughters is over by now it must be a great place for old and young Sam Ballantine will be the next it appears Sam wanted to Marry Alice Duncan so his Mother nor Bella Jane would not have her to come there Sam put Bella J. out of the house on Tuesday so she went and sent a telegram for Willie to come home so he landed at twelve oclock that night but I think their [there?] was not much sleep in the wee town that night so Sam has got his passage Alice went to Newtown on Sunday and Sam met her and both went to Newtown it was rumoured they were going to Scotland but Both came back Sam said at home he was going to Baronscourt on Sunday I suppose the next time they start they will go ahead right or wrong Patrick's Day passed of [off?] quietly here the Day was very warm but changed next evg [evening?] we had snow here some Days last week and rain almost since but today is nice and Spring like appearance Tommy and Wm. [William?] is setting [pale?] in the garden today with the help of Willie John & me School is Closed this last week on account of Miss Dunn not being well the doctor is attending her she is some thing better but they were afraid she would hardly ever teach school again the Doctor said both lungs were affected I saw Tommy Hay's Picture in Moses Ballantines he look like himself not failed much after the winter trials I see you would like to get a Bycicle [bicycle?] to be in fashion with they [the?] other's John C. would like one to come home on Sat and go on Mon John Gilkison's cost ten guines [guineas?] Louise Campbell has a new one to go up and down to the Plum [Plumbridge?] night and morning anything atall [at all?] to keep in fashion with the ladies We got a book from Mr Boyd last week the Irish Presbyte [Presbyterian?] we will send it to you shortly you will see something about the Irish in it We might get in monthly after Some time I can hardly get news to fill this letter although I thought I had a great deal to tell you Mary says its not worth much all I have wrote but sure its only a penny after all So good bye wishing you a merry Easter Eliza C Smyth |
