| Transcript | [No Envelope] [Page 1] Castledamph May 5th 99 Dear Brother Once more I take the pleasure of writing to you again Willie John rec [received] your letter on 25th April very proud he is to get a letter addressed to himself I think their [there] was hardly one came in but seen his letter or heard it read he is going to write you a long letter next week about cuckoos lambs gosling and birds nests The cuckoo has come this week nothing but cuckoos calling Black birds singing since Monday We had very wet weather up till [until?] that but now you would think there was not a drop [sic] rain this month people thought they would not get the potatoes in ground was so wet we had nothing but a few ridges set till yesterday and today we are pretty near done Willie Ballantine and Mosey was over all day and Joseph Gilkison and son Willie Jamey Tilda [Page 2] all came after tea time so we had the field covered with people and five horses William gave days to Willie Ballantine last week so then he came yesterday Father William and Tommy was in Gortin fair they Sold a cow at £9. Tom had some sheep over but sold none bought one at £12.6d. well Tillie Ballantine Lenamore has got married to a Roman C. [catholic] on Friday morning at the chapel John C [Charles?] says he is fifty years old and grey in the head both started to Glasgow after they were married Archibald Duncan JP is in the infirmary since Monday week they would not tell where he was said he was visiting he has not been well this long time he is not much better yet the gravel is what his complaint is they say his father died with the same and I suppose Uncle Alex. [Page 3] There was a Presbtery [Presbyterian?] meeting in our church on Wednesday so you may be sure archibald is bad when he could not come down Sandy opened the Sabbath School on Sunday morning for the first time but perhaps not the last. Mother received a shawls [sic] from Tommy Hay and a Brooch from Mary same day as your letter he knit the shawl himself. We will send you £5 today Mary is going to the Plum [Plumbridge?] to get a new dress fitted on so she will send these few pounds to you Maggie McKernan is dressmaker her and Annie McKelvey has their trade learned now Annie had sore eyes so she is in Derry this last fortnight goes in every day to the hospital she will come home tomorrow I think alright. [Page 4] Joseph McFarlands ones has flitted up from the Plum [Plumbridge?] back again to Drumnasparke set [let?] the Plum [Plumbridge?] house to Miss McCann at £12 or £15 for the year. Mrs Nelson has come to her new house she gave a dance to some of the quality on Friday evg [evening] Dan was down with the Violin she will need to sell cheap there is so many at Plum Plumbridge?] one [sic] will try to beat the other [sic] Sam Ballantine is at home yet but not doing anything he wont leave until he get [sic] his share we hear Tommy McFarland will go with him whatever time that will be Joe Glenn is sorry he stooped [stopped?] so long in Ireland likes his place so well he is driving a team the return has come back a week ago of the ship Lizzie [Mon?] and L M Dunn went in this is very bad writing but it will do as the others is busy No more Eliza C Smyth |
