Dear sister
I received
your welcome letter a few
nights ago and tonight
I received the Irish Times
I see by your letter that
you are having nice
weather in the green isle
this winter.
We have had some
cold days in the early part

[page 2]
of the winter but the
last few weeks have not
been very cold: to-day
it has been snowing all
the time though it is
only a few inches yet.
Last week we had some
skating but this thaw
has spoiled that part of
it
Father wanted to
know what religious
persuasion our teachers
were of Two of them are
[Presbyterian?] and the other
is a Methodist I was at a
prespyterian [Presbyterian?]
church to night for the

[page 3]
first time since I came
back. I did not go to
Woodslee to night as I
intend staying up here
part of the Sundays [sic].
I changed boarding houses
as the first place I was
in the room was to [too?]
cold to study in so I just
went to a better place The
people that I board with
are Methodist though
a young girl school teacher
that boarded here is a
prespyterian [Presbyterian?]
and one of the boys in Eng
[English?] Church, so we are a
mixture

[page 4]
We have a kind of
entertainment every two
weeks on Friday night
so this was our evening
It usually last for an
hour and a half after four
we had one funny scotch
reading from one of the
teachers today I did
not tell you what I paid
for board now. I pay
2 dollars per week if I go
to Woodslee Friday evening
and 21/4 If I stay all week
so it does not make much
difference whether I go or
stay.

[page 5]
I think from this forward
you had better send my
letter to Essex as I will get
them quicker than at
Woodslee How does the
Miss Dunbar get along
with teaching and other
ways I intended writing
to them but I have delayed
I also forgot to write to
the lodge well I will
some day soon I will give
them a few words perhaps
it wont be to their praise
either

[page 6]
I have got so many
books . I ponder over that
I hardly have a minute
to spare I will have to
try an examination again
June so I would not like
to fail and I dont know
any too much yet.
I have a letter from Jas
[James?] Ballantine about a
week ago. I suppose Daniel
cut quite a figure after
the fishing I’m sure he
would make a good race .

[page 7]
I see by your letter John
got a thorn in his leg. It
must have been quite a
branch If he is going
to school and going for
some [benefit?] it [sic] all
right I suppose Mary studies
his lessons all right [alright?]
She ought to take up
algebra now. She will not
find much difficulty with
the first three rule [sic] except
remembering the signs
We are working at simple
equations If I was in
Marys place I would
not work much & would
attend to books

[page 8]
I wrote a letter to Charles
McCullagh and never
got [sic] answer yet What [sic] the
matter with him I suppose.
I owe J Houston one well
I will soon answer. Is
Willie going to stay at home
now. I dont think I
can think of anything more
so I will finish and go
to bed. Write soon and
put all the news
you think
of it in [sic]
