Letter 1

Essex
Feb 9 1896

Dear Parents
I received your
letter last Thursday night
I am glad to know that
the people are all well
This is Sunday night. so I am
writing this letter before I go
to bed as I think I would
not have much time tomorrow
I was down at Woodslee since
Friday. came back this eve.
because there is some snow
and it would not be very
nice to walk to-morrow morning
I do not go down to
Woodslee every Sunday
but I was invited to a
party last Friday night
so I went and had a good
nights fun.
I see by your letter that
the Duncans had a big spree
well its is not a very creditable
affair to have a lot such
as they were. We are having
weekly examinations at school
now, these are just for the
purpose of seeing what
progress the pupils are making
I took third place in geography
paper last week 68%

Our next examinations is
in Grammer [grammar?] it is on Tuesday
I dont think I will do very
good in it as the papers are
pretty hard for me.
We have an entertainment
every other Friday and there
is a paper that the [they?] call the
Argus & anything That
one see (sic) going on during these
two weeks or see any pupil
do anything or say anything
that you would Think
would be a drive on him
or her (as the case may be)
It is put in this paper and
then read out at the meeting
some time there is some
pretty comical [pieces?] [wit?]
It has not been very much
Winter here yet and I dont
think the [they?] will be much
this year now; today it has
snowed some but it is not
cold. I do not think it is
near as cold as some other
Winters I have been here
All Woodslee people are
well I think Sarah Ann
is in Windsor now but I
don't know what she is doing,
Well I think this will do
for this time so I will go
to bed
Yours
James A Smyth
