TranscriptPrescott, Canada West,
July 10th 1858.
My Dear Sir.
I received a note, some time ago, from Robt
[Robert ?] Boyd, grandson of my Uncle Lyles, of Cauigs,
& I would have answered it before this date, but absence
from home prevented me.
I certify that I am a son of Robt [Robert ?] Boyd's Senr
[senior ?] of Cauigs, deceased, that I am the only surviving
life of the Lease of my said Father, Robt [Robert ?] Boyd,
held under Messrs Caufield & Steeples, & at the rate, I
think, of about 7s 6d or 8s stg, per acre; that I was a
boy when the Lease was renewed, & my Brothers, James &
William & myself were the lives of said Lease; that I left
home in the year 1820, will, in a few months, if I live,
be 38 years in Prescott, am in my 68 year, since March
last, have only been prevented from preaching three
different sabbaths by sickness, since I came to this
country, & thank Providence my Constitution & health are
good. I preach twice every sabbath, attend my Sabbath
School, & am quite competent, both in mind & body, to
perform all my ministeral duties. All the Ministers of
the Ballymena Presbytery were all acquainted with me.
I am quite aware of the solemnity under which I make
the above statement; & if it be not satisfactory to the
Land Agent, if you return it to me, I will testify to
it on an oath; & if that should not satisfy him; if the
occupying Tenant, whoever he may be, would pay me a small
portion of my expense, say, from œ12 - to 14 stg - I would
pay a visit to Ireland, next summer, & present myself
to the Land Agent.
No wonder, indeed, he is willing to break the Lease,
for it must be among the louest [lowest?] & oldest
[takings?] in the Estate. If I knew his name, I would so
arrange it before my death, (if the Lease should remain as
it now is) that my Executors would immediately inform him
of the event. Honor [Honour ?] & honesty are good for every
man. Please inform me of the result of this communication;
& give my kind respects to all my Friends - I have the
honor to remain,
Dear Sir,
yours with all respect -
Robt [Robert ?] Boyd, D.D.
Presby [Presbyterian ?] Minister,
Prescott,
Canada West.
