Dear Sister etc,
Now I am not going to write a
letter, but just a short note. I am
now in Philadelphia In a
former letter I told you I was on
a rambling holiday excursion
Reached Phila [Philadelphia?] yesterday. Have
found lots of old Plumbridge
& Castledamph residents.
Some are all right [alright?] some would have
been better in Ireland In case I
do not describe these again be
sure to mention it.
I have seen a good deal in my
time and I have seen a good deal (sic)
You'll understand of course that
I have not very [much?] just enough to
have a good time enjoy life, and
appreciate a trip and the
beauties of nature etc. Well
I thank God that that is my case
I am so thankful that I got
What little education I have
or I might be like the most of
those I see.
I am also thankful extremely
so that (sic) I went to Essex. as if I
had came (sic) here I would just have
been like the rest. There is no change
on hundreds of them, Talk the
same drink the same act
the same eat the same My
heavens the houses sime [some?] of
them live in?
Now yesterday I saw Fathers [Father s?]
relatives stayed last night with
them, with Sara Ballantine, now
Mrs Wasson, no change, James
Ballantine no change - each
as Irish as "Paddy [P--?]"
Hamilton Ballantine, Tom
and Chas [Charles?] are [dead?].
Am staying tonight with Tom
Hayes old John [John s?] son - You know
you must stay with them though
I would rather not.
I am hurrying with this letter
in order to meet Archie McClelland
I promised to meet him
at 8PM, 40 mins [minutes?] yet.
I just had a Turkish bath in this
hotel given me by McCullagh of
Glenrone, I am unable to find
Lillie McCullagh and I would
like to have seen her.
I have heard enough old [country?]
talk to do me for a while
Chas [Charles?] Ballantine
[Ballantine's?] family is
the only one fairly well off
Both father & mother are dead
The girls are now away at
some summer resort. If they
were here I suppose I would
be entertained, I do not care
to meet the other (sic) very much
I will tell you all particulars
in future letters At present I
am in a hurry. I am going to
Atlantic City tomorrow,

[In-----?]

James A Smyth
