Dear Father and Mother

I received your
letter of the 9th inst last
week and am glad to know
that you are all enjoying
good health
We are all well here Annie
came up from St Thomas
yesterday evening and has
the two boys with her and they
are keeping everything moving
to day [today?].
The weather here this summer
has not been very dry usually
some rain every week.
We have all the wheat in
and about 5 acres of oats cut.
I am working every day with
Uncle when we are cutting grain
I set up the sheaves after the
binder and one does not have
much idle time I don t find
farming one bit easier now,
than it was five years ago I
think if I was going to farm I
would rather take the Old Country
for it. More pleasure and not
every minute kept at some kind
of work like the men are here
I am glad to know that
Elkin did not win at the
law, I suppose he ll have to
pull in a peg now.
It is a new thing for an
Orange Sermon in [Glencull?]
I should think some people would
think that as bad as the
introducing of hymns
I expect to get a full report
of twelfth proceeding soon now.
We did not have a very good
day here I did not think
much of it It rained very
heavy in the afternoon. None
out of this house went but me. I
met a young fellow that came
out on the Parisian with us
by the name of Weir he wore
a black Sash so I suppose
he was further advanced
than I was
I suppose you were expecting
the examination news before
this. I send you a newspaper
and the five exam s paper (sic) and
circlar [circular?] that you may get
some news in that line You
will see in the paper that
I took fifth place
that is on the paper which
I sent home. But the exams
to which these papers belong I
will not know for about three
weeks yet, though I am
afraid I hardly got enough
marks especially in drawing
In No 1 quest. [question?] The drawing
was a common biscuit box
placed on a chair a wooden pail
on top of box and a flat tin
dish leaned up against the box
all placed to the right My own
judgment I am not sure
whether I passed or not (My ink
is done) If I did not pass
I don t know whither [whether?] I will
get second form or not so
it would not pay me to spend
another year in [Sin.?] [div?] of
first form for those four Subjects.
Before this there was only one
part of first form but now they
have added another form so
that the one that we ten pupils
have jumped (see newspaper)
If one did not intend to
teach School here they would
not require the Commercial
Examination. I wish you
could send me paper set
for Third Class or Second Class
teachers in Ireland I would
like to see how much difference
there is between the two systems
of Education. If there is no
new [news?] on that Circular
you can give it to Miss Dunn
to She sees (sic) the regulation of
these schools. Perhaps her or
Miss Dunbar could give the
papers set for the Teachers this
year if they can send them
to me
If I get Second or First
Class paper which was given (sic)
this year I will send them to
some of those School Teachers
These finished their exams
on the 21st Inst I think this
is all the new [news?] I have to tell
I hope you had a good day
on twelfth

Jas [James?] A Smyth

I send you a grammar paper
I think I Sent more papers
