PRIVATE
Essex June 26th

Perhaps some people like to hear
my letters so anything I want to
say I put it by itself and you can
as you please with it.
I got your last money all right
$24.35. I must thank you for this
as I had intended to do without
this last amount although I might
have been a little stinted.
I suppose all I have to do is pass
the examination and then I wont
feel as it is spent badly. You see
passing the exam . is not very hard in
one way, all you have to do is write
nine or ten sheets of foolscap on each
subject and they supply paper, pens
ink, etc but the only condition is that
you write what is wanted and
herein sometimes lies the difficulty.
I sometimes feel afraid of failing
but when I look at our standing

[Page 2]
during the year I have as good a
chance of passing as any of the others
and in fact better than the most
of them. The teachers think that
I should get through all right if I
be careful.
Don’t send no more money;
I will give you a fair idea
after all is over how I got along
and then I will judge what to
do I have enough money now
until school commence [sic] and
after that & I can earn money during
holidays so dont send no more
until I tell you.

James A. Smyth

P.S I will put a Canadian Jubilee
stamp on this letter if I can get
one. You will notice it anyhow,
it is different from the others.
