William may be all right in his opinion as I do not save a great deal during these last 6 months. but I had a very small salary only at the rate of 275 Dollars per year, and large expenses. If I had saved enough or had enough on hand I would probably went [sic] home during the holidays but I think it hardly worth while to spend a lot of money for a few months home. [Page 2] II I shall begin now and arrange for a trip next year, in the holidays I am not sure yet whether I can go to New York and Philadelphia or not. I am afraid it would take a lot of money to go there and stay a few weeks. I sent you, a few newspapers on Saturday. You will see in the Woodslee news that Belle and Sara are going home. I should have gone down on Saturday but I was busy correcting papers. I may go down this week some night at any rate I shall go down Saturday and Sunday. They leave here a week from Saturday. [Page 3] III Geo. [George?] Thomas and Bert [Albert?] Allan two Essex boys left here last week with cattle for the Old Country. They attend them going over, and get a free passage there and back. Geo [George?] is quite a comrade of mine. They go to Floscow. I expect them back in six weeks. They are just gone for the fun and for an outing to see the Old Country. You should have things fairly well fixed when Belle Smyth goes over there She has not much use for Orangemen I hope you show her a good celebration on the 12 July. There is a Grand Orange Council at New York on 25 July. If the Orangemen there want to be up to style they [Page 4] IV could appoint me as their delegate and pay my expenses and I would attend for them. Would that be a nice way to get an outing? Eh? I think the sign of the three violin players being away is that they must know more than those that stay. Violin training results in brain development. and so on, I hope Mary gets along all right for a few year’s It will not hurt her. For John I am sure he would just make as good a farmer as if he had never left home, and for myself, with a little practise [practice?] I could beat any of the boys yet on a days' work. So experience on any line is a help in place of a hinderance [hindrance?]. [Page 5] V There is a social at English [Church?] tonight. Ice cream cake etc. This is something that never takes place with you folks. I think it is the same in the towns there, The social time is much better in this Country than at home. Of course they are hardly friendly enough there to have a [town?] social. It cost 15 cts so that gives one an opportunity of spending ones' spare change. There are many such opportunities in this Country. I think I shall close as supper is ready - almost 6 oclock,- Give a good long string of news, next time.
