With handwriting (in ink) on front of envelope: "[arrived?] [January?] [the?] [4th 96?] South Woodslee Decr [December?] 20 1895,, Dear Father & Mother I received your letter last night and was glad to hear from you, You seem to be longing for a letter from me. but you dont' think when you should write. I think it is three weeks since I had one from you before I had one' from Ja s [James?] Huston [Houston?] a few day s ago and' had one from Willie Gilkison last night received his and yours' at the same time I am thinking since I received these two letters that note paper is very scarce in Castledamph. as there is not enough writing and paper' in the two to make one. But although they are short and pinched of note paper still I am always thankful to get one. I got to Woodslee yesterday from High School, [the?] School' did not close' until [untill?] to-day as' there is a concert and' gimn [gym?] performances to take place this afternoon but I did not wait for it the school opens' again on' Monday January 6th so we have two weeks holidays I am getting along very well for so far though some subjects are hard to learn. I suppose John C, and Mary are attending school now. You want to keep them at it as' long' as possible and, let them learn to be something If I get along all right [alright?] and all be well I will be able to learn Mary some higher subjects in a few years I will write Mary a letter some of these days I am in a hurry to get this letter written as I am going down town to practise playing Violin and organ together I am going to play a piece to-night in Temperance Lodge We have been killing hens duck & turkeys since yesterday morning so you suspect there is a pile of head cut off during that time. They are going to market tomorrow with them. They [the?] young folks are going down to Annie again Christmas I dont know whether I will go or not It would cost 4 or five shillings so I want to spend as little as possible I was thinking one sheet would do me this time but I am starting this one Let me finish it or not Willie Gilkison tells me that you have fine times on the road only a little scraping to do, well that good exercise for the bodys [bodies?] You know us fellows that go to High School have to swing clubs and dumb bells and lot (sic) of others exercises as the teachers say to strengthen the muscles so if they work hard enough scraping the road it will act in the same way and by the time, The four years' are' ended' they will be as' strong as' horses I suppose they have a fine singing School they may with patience and perervance [perseverance?] and plenty of practise [practice?] become singers' yet, I sent a letter to Uncle' John yesterday you should receive a letter from me shortly after you wrote and also Willie Gilkison I think I have said about all I know now except about the weather and it is Irish all this week you know what kind that is Write soon again James A Smyth (Written at end of second page.)
