Dear Father & Mother
I received your
letter a few days ago and
am very glad to know that
you are all well. I was
writing to James Houston so
I thought I would not
answer your letter for a
few days untill [until?] I heard
the result of the examination
The names were published in
the Toronto Globe on Saturday
but I am sorry to say I
failed in my examination
No name (sic) were published but
the successful candidates.
I cannot say in what subjects
I failed but I expect it
was in drawing, I will
know the number of marks
I got in each subject in a few
days as they are sent to the
Principal of the High School
By failing in this examination
it leaves me in a bad position
as if I had got through I
would (I think) have been able
to get a third class teachers (sic)
certificate next July and then
it requires four months at [Model?]
School so I would almost
being [have been?] able to teach in a year
from now and earned my
own money
Now I might be able to
study for the two examinations
that is for third class certificate
also for the one I failed in this
year and try both next year
there is a possibility of doing
this but it is very hard work
keeping up both set (sic) of studies.
School opened on Wednesday
last I was up at the opening
but came back again to help
Uncle Thresh today.
The Principal of the school
did not know
whether I could be able for (sic)
the two exams in one years (sic)
or not. he talked as though
he would like me to take the
same exam's [exams?] next year with
a few of the II form subject [subjects?]
and at [in] that way in [it?] would
take two years for third class
(of course one would be sure of it
in that time)
But I told him if he
thought it would not be
possible to take as I said
before the two exam's [exams?] I would
not go any longer, because
I dont think I could afford
to spend the money for two
years. If you read That
circular which I sent you
will see the subject [subjects?]
for different forms but unless one
passed the examination on those four
printed paper [papers?] which I sent
you, you could not get a
teachers certificate of any
kind either third or first
I think you should understand
all I have said so I think
I will say no more on the
subject. Does Mary go
to School yet, I would keep
her at it.
I am sorry to hear of that
law suit I expect it will
take quite a lot of money to
keep it going and I am afraid
it is quite a bad case against
them It is different [law?] at
Omagh besides (sic) at Gortin.
I did not tell you How many
got throught [through] the examination
there were 9 out of 36 and
nearly all spent two years for it
Annie & Charly [Charlie] and Family
are gone home. Sara Duncan
is here now on her holidays
she is (sic) the place Willie John
left at Sarnia I am not
sure what pay he gets but
I think it is over £2 per week
I must quite [quit?] now as the
threshing machine is just
at the door so we will be
busy threshing in a half an
hour we will have good
hard work now untill [until?] this
time to morrow [tomorrow?] We have
20 acres of oats to thresh
I think this is all no
more at present
Write soon and give all
the news

Jas [James?] A Smyth
