Essex. Ont. [Ontario?]
June, 12 1899.

Dear Parents

Am in possession
of your letter which was here
for me, on my arrival from
Woodslee to-day. I went
down to Woodslee on Sat.
morning, and then I was
informed first of A. Duncans
Death. Uncle had received
a Paper from [Donegal?]
in which his death was
reported, I expected then
I would get a letter [when?]
I got up to Essex, I
wonder did he make a will
If not, it leaves things in
a rather unpleasant condition.
I see you folks are awaiting
my letter. I think you should
receive one about June 1st.
There was a while, that
I did not answer very quickly
so it kept you waiting.
There is nothing wrong only
a little delay in answering and
to make up for that deficiency
I answer this one at once
so I wont be putting it off
from day to day.
I don't remember whether
I told you the day of
my examinations or not
School closes two weeks from
Wednesday and we begin
our examinations on July 7th
and it ends on July 17th
although there is a few days
between that I am not writing.
I have to write to half -
past eleven o clock in the
morning of July 12th So
cannot take that day.
As far as passing, I do
not know how I will come
out. It is a difficult
examination, but I will do
my best and if I fail I shall
have others to accompany
in that state.
You never can tell how you
will come out until you
see the papers as one has
no idea [of?] [nature?] [of?] papers
set. I know that I am
very weak on English History
though I may know enough
for a pass. I will study
as much as I am able
from now until the exam,
as the last few weeks
count for a [let?]. We have
a lot of work in the
Higher Mathematics both
in Trigonometry [Eucled?]
and algebra. There is one
consolation however that
I can review the work
alone for next year and
teach school at same time
so I wont have to come [back?]
to school again,
I see John can make
something already, that
puts me in remembrance of
a little stool I made one
Xmas morning about 20
years ago. I had nothing
to make it with but a [Tool?]
knife and a saw and I
remember uncle John coming
in and praising me for
how well it was done,
I think I was the [brighest?]
boy in the family. [So?] that
[motto?] edifice that I built
in the grove standing yet.
I think it is fifteen years
since I put that up. There is
a wall down at [uncle?] John
leading [to the?] spout that I also
helped to build a long time
ago. I often think of these
things that I done when I
was much younger than I
am now, I see John says
that they are in need of
a drummer. if I were there
I could lend assistance.
I drum in the [brass?] [band?]
[here?] yet.
[if?] I am living and [well?]
next year I may [try?] and
be home for the 12th July that
is if I have enough money
and can afford it during
holidays if not any longer,
I was almost forgetting
to tell you I saw that boy of
Cassie, born on 1 June
Quite a boy -saw
him yesterday evening.
[Annie?] & [Charles?], are
moving from St. Thomas to
[Leamington?] - a place about
[15 mls?] from here. It is on
a [branch line?] of [Michigan?]
[Central?] [railroad?] and [she?]
and [chas?] [Charles?] got the [running?]
of the [Engine?] on that [branch?]
He will be home every night
and Sundays and makes
only two trips per day. It is
pretty close to home. One
can drive there in about
3 hours or go on a [bycicle?] [bicycle] in
about an hr [hour?] and half.
I may not answer [those?]
other correspondences for a
few days yet. and I think
I have told you [all?] [I?] paid
three Dollars [for?] exam fees
Hoping you are all well.
[I remains?] Yours
James A. Smyth
