South Woodslee
Oct. 4. 1898
Dear Sister
In answer to your letter which I
received Sept 28 I am glad to say that we
are all well
I did not go to the Worlds Fair when I
told you but I will be going in about
three hours from now Sarah, Belle, Cassie
Willie John and me
we are all going to night [tonight?]
at 6 o clock [o'clock?] thier [there?] was
3 or 4 people went this morning they say it is grand
I will be able to tell you more in about a week
I will take a ride on the Ferris Wheel I
suppose you have read about it I did not
get a pass There is excursions every
Wednsday [Wednesday?] and Saturday It is
single fare for the round trip $8.40 cents from
Woodslee We are expecting to have a good
time I am working at Essex now I was here
Saturday to Monday
I will be off work now for about
ten days In regards to what Alice Duncan
says or any other one I do not care
Railroading is as respectable a
work as any other I suppose they dont
think much of Charley Allison he is just
at [sic] Railroad only on a different branch of
work Tell them that if we do work on a
Railroad we have got lots of money Charles
Allison has built a house that they have
not got
If railroading was not respectable
I would not be at it But I will tell you
what is not respectable that is keeping a
public House the lowest work in this
Country so just tell them that dont pay no
attention to what they say I am just as
good as they are and I will railroad as
long as I like and quite [quit?] when I like tell
them that No more at present I must get
ready now good bye
James A Smyth
