Dear People All
I suppose by this
time you have got Xmas & New
Year & all over I think I told
you I intended going up to
Rome for Xmas to see the
Ballantines. I left Bayville
Sat 27th & stopped in the city
until Monday I got a train
at 10 30am & got up there at
5pm & it was an express
at that so you may guess
it was quite a ways up

[Page 2]
They Had snow up there
3" [inches?] deep & it was
8 below zero Sat & Sunday
they did not have any snow
in New York at all I got into
New York Sunday evening at
4.30 Pm stopped with
S McFarland until Tuesday noon
I saw the new year in
& the old one out just
at 12 oclock every horn
and whistle was blowing
you could not hear the
next one to you talking
Broadway is a great business
Center and you could not walk
the crowd was so thick

[Page 3]
The fair [fare?] was 10$ it was
a little cheap on account of the
Holidays I certenly [certainly?]
did have a good time I was at
a couple of Partys [parties?]
& I was at one dance but
I could not dance the two
step I only danced twice they
tried to pull me trough [through?]
it I would not dance any
more I got an introduction
with a girl from England
a very fine girl a great
singer & piano player so
if ever I visit Rome again
Im to go to see her I wonder
what Father will think of
that

[Page 4]
Be sure & give me all the
news about Xmas I forgot
to say I got Marys letter
about the Soiree in the School
I suppose the People will say
like what we used to say “They
are crazy they wont dance
any more” I never think of dancing
any more [anymore?] I seen [saw?]
J Dunbar dance one night & it put
me in mind of Home he has all his old
steps yet
Now I must hurry up & get
this posted wishing you all a happy
& prosperous New Year
No more at present
Write soon again
Your Brot [Brother?] J C [John Charles?] Smyth
