I think I told you that last year we paid off [£?]50 to A Huston leaving [£?]400 - A McClelland [£?]50 William Ballantine [£]40 your uncle [L?] [Hay?] [£?]41 this year if posibly [possibly?] we intend [to?] give Bella her [£?]50 then 5 per cent on all - rent and everything Besides will I am afraid [will?] keep us all our time. its like yourself we mak [make?] some But it takes some to keep ous [us?] going Well [mary?] has arived [arrived?] safe and she look [sic] well She has Improved a good Bit and it must have cost some money to keep her going as Bella [&?] Elis [Eliza?] Says She has more clothing than they Both and of a better quality [Page 3] She is like you she says the [they?] are many changes to be made as could be. made we till [tell?] her we must wait to the Debt is cleared first wich [which?] I am afraid will not be for some time - we had to laugh Thursday we had a pig to come in for a few nights and she said o my Jim many a times had to Denay [deny?] that pigs would be in the house - so she made off to Houstons we will be puting [putting?] them out tomorrow Monday So She will get Back again - She can play good now but I think she would not like to Dig potatoes the way she did She is visiting some and she has been over in Stewarts I did not ask hir [her?] what she thought of it Elise [Eliza?] will Give you all. Better then [than?] me - as she has more time to talk together [Page 4] I dont know how she learned such a nice tung [tongue?] in such a short time everyone asked hir [her?] it was a wonder that James did not come with you she tells your comming [coming?] next summer Well I hope you will take good care of your money and spend as little as possibly [possible?] so that I hope we will be all living and well until that time - to meet each other in a family circle and to enjoy the pleasure of being together once more with father and Mother Sisters and Brothers - them papers comes regular the Big one is a Good paper Master James comes and reads them he says its an excelent [excellent?] paper its all the one we get now we thank you for such a lot of everything that you sent the [they?] fit John and tomy [Tommy?] But not William [Page 5] this Sumer [summer?] has been very week [wet?] It was imposibly [impossible?] to get hay up we have more rain this year than I have saw for some time we have some hay to [cook?] yet we finished the cutting of the corn yestargy [yesterday?] those days is [Drag?] and if it keeps up we will have all in this Saturday comming [coming?] we got Davies Mower and we went to him and got quicker Done - we Cut 3 acres of Stewarts from [9 acres?] one day So I think that was good we cut the field below the meddow [meadow?] in a start of a day I think we will have to get one next year if Everything would go well - as its usefull [useful?] for the cutting [cutting?] of the meddow [meadow?] [Page 6] I See in the paper that your school is commenced again you have a Good lot of hard work But the pay is good if you go on with the rise now and again you might get up to 150 so what farming would come up to that if all of us would mak [make?] [£]50 we would think we were dowing [doing?] well I know if we had no intrest [interest?] to pay we would do = But that takes away the money and has nothing for it last year it took [£]27-10 of interest so that to do something with would make more - But let us not complain as long as we have good helth [health?] that is the Best Blessing of all - I think this cribble [scribble?] and Bad spelling will do for this time we are all in good helth [health?] at present So good By your loving Father John J [James?] Smyth Transcribed by Chris Devenney |
