| Transcript | [Front of envelope] Mr James Alexander Smyth Southwoodslee Lock Box 4 Essex County Ontario Canada [Stamp torn off] [Back of envelope] [Stamped] PLUMBRIDGE AP 20 93 [Stamped] 10 HAMILTON MY 2 93 [CANADA?] [Stamped] [---?] [--?] [Written on Right] Ans [Answered?] May 12 93 James A Smyth [Letter 1] [Page 1] April 16th Castledamph 93 My Dear James We are all well at present – well with regard to old Marget [Margaret’s?] money – Archy says he invested the £927 in this [Fox?] and Hamond company accordent [according?] to hir [her?] directions never to be drew [drawn?] in his own name so we do not know whether its hir [her?] money or not – the company has failed and the £927 is only worth £200 now and perhaps if sold would not draw £100 David Beattie and me went and had a solicittar [solicitor?] and counciller [councillor?] advice on it – There [Their?] advice was to enter Archy into the law for the whole amount – But James Huston [Houston?] (Page 2) and William Huston [Houston?] would not go into law against him Then Beattie and me took out administrations – and we would sold the whole if it should [would?] only paid the costs – But when we were a sertent [certain] length we called a nother [another?] meeting – then they all agreed to pay as [fair?] as we went and not to putt [put?] it to loss – The costs was [£?] 7 7s 5d was £1 10s on each house that is one to represent each family Then we signed an agreement on a sixpence stamp each and all of every family signing it with the exceptions of your Uncle and William Huston [Houston?] who could not sign But Archy said he would take chance of them [Page 3] this signing was for Archy to transfer the shares to the different familys [families?] 16 shares comming [coming?] to every family and [Batties] 16 shares or rather Aunt Elise Monteith was to be sold Draw what she would – in that agreement we have to pay the funeral expence [expenses?] they say now is £10 00 [£10?] and the costs of the transfair [transfer?] which will be about £10 more Archy says that the firm has paid know [no?] intrest [interest?] since he invested it 2 years ago 5£ [£5?] I believe would cover [the?] the expence [expenses?] of the weake [wake?] and funeral its our opinion that its not old Margets [Margaret’s?] money atall [at all?] – see how he lost £5 to Saly [Sally?] [Burtly] see how [Alan?] Duncan lost 200 and had to go to the asylum over it and plenty other [others?] – [Page 4] So I think the whole affair will be like everything els [else?] it wont be with [worth?] the costs and trouble this is the person to trust with your money and he will tak [take?] goid [good?] care of it – you may send this to them if you like but dont [don’t?] [neglect?] But tell uncle all about it I will give your uncle his [Archy?] Duncan caracter [character?] and reputation some time that will let him know whither [whether?] he is solid or onsolid [unsolid?] and which when I will write I will not be afraid to let it be made knowen [known?] as I know all about the Duncans as well as they do about the Smyths The name of J – P [J.P.] to a man [man’s?] name now is nothing thought of here cince [since?] [he?] can be made J – P [J.P.] at any workhouse a fit place to make lawgivers |
