(Letter One)

Castledamph Septemer [September?]
28-93

Dear James
In answer to your
letter wich [which?] we recevied [received?]
wrote (sic) from Cornell Sept [September?] 5
wich [which?] informs us of you still being
in good helth [health?] - and we think
that you are in Better Spirits
than in some time ago (sic) - William
Gilky has also recevied [received?] your
Letter - is that place like unto
our [Brae?] not Dangersom [dangerous?]
But we hope your stay there
was not long - well - I think
The two letters before this one
that Bella wrote will give you
all about harvest we had all
in on the first of September
A fine early harvest the weather
is wet now and a little cold.
you want to know about
Shooting The [there?] were four meen [men?]
come [came?] about the 10th of august
to Glengaw and Shot over the
hills- The Keeper Robert McFarland
give (sic) chase and the [they?] tourned [turned?] on
him and fired 4 shoots [shots?] at him
two of them taking affect [effect?] on
his legs arms and face - the police
then watched it night and day
so that not a shoot [shot?] could be
fired. The [There?] were four meen [men?] arrested
at the cross and Brought to the
plumb [Plumbridge?] Barricks [Barracks?]. Joseph McConnell
Andrew J Campbell and McFarland
was taken Down But the [they?] could
not identify them and the [they?] got off.
But it has poot [put?] an end to shooting
this season - The people anyhow
is not on very goot [good?] terms - almost
worse than when you were at home.
William and Tomy [Tommy?] intended to write
this time William is at a Drawing
of turff [turf?] to W Gilkson [Gilkison?] to Day [today?]
Tomy [Tommy?] is up on the mountain
with Glenrone meen [men?] these two
Days helping them to wire
we have run our wire to the top
straight- with McConnells out
side [outside?] fence - William Ballantine
has his wired along the roadside
and up to Genrone [Glenrone?] Ditch -Glenrone
has wired Down Andrew Duffy
to the road now the [they?] are going up
the hill to [till?] the [they?] meet our post
on the top. So they asked Tom
and James Hay [uncle?] to give them a
Day or two. So after sometime
sheep will not get Down
very handy - Charles Gordon is
wireing [wiring?] along the roadside in
[Meenmore?] Barned [Bernard?] McNamee and
Any [Andy?] [Bartely?] will soon have
there [their?] farms all wired - We kept
all the lambs this year and
Bought 16 Besides at 5s and some
at 6s 5d - each the [then?] sold 11 [weathers?]
at 11s-6d each - I cannot tell you
how manny [many?] the [they?] have althogether [altogether?]
But they will give you ancount [account?]
when the [they?] write. we intend to
join to Dig the potatoes to morrow [tomorrow?]
friday. The [there?] are some has now
commenced But not manny [many?]
I supose [suppose?] you will wonder when
you read Bellas [Bella's?] letter about
over the Burn ones - If you write
to them at any time wach [watch?] what
you will put in it. So that they
will not have anything to talk
of - as there [their?] tongues is (sic) pretty loose
at the present time. I remain
your father
