We have received no answer to any of the moneys [sic] wich [which?] was sent January 17th We sent you £3 bls [bills?] February 9 -we sent 6 and has [sic] got no word cince [since?]. My dear James -Ever since you left here was there such a time of Sickness in Ireland Willie [William?] Smyth [sic] funeral went Past yesterday 2 and 3 and 5 corps [corpses?] in the graveyard at one [once?] almost every day [page 2] They are not a house in our town But they are from 5 to one down in each house Some very bad-others not so bad I must now tell you about our own house your Mother William Bella and Elisa is all confined to bed Bella was not cast down to last night that is four of us some of them may not be to [too?] long God only knows I am Just staggering on my feet if May [Mary?] and Tomy [Tommy?] keeps up its [it’s?] not so bad -The Doctors is done up day and night Willie [William?] Smyth was only 8 days after he took it and old William Gilky [Gilkinson?] about to [two?] hours Bad So times is hard in this contery [country?] and the people is Badly put about. [page 3] perhaps we will have a letter this week from you [we?] all think you cannot be well. If I get one this week I will answer it if I can good news or otherways - I trust I will be able to give you good news I trust in God that they will all come out all right in a few days - But just think of four Down in one house - and a Death below us and one above us – [one?] Chair’s nerer [never?] comming [coming?] in but passing on up -it seems a pleague [plague?] altogether I hope and trust that the Lord will stay his hand and that people will be restored [page 4] to helth [health?] again. You may let your uncle know work is also at a stand still in most houses your uncle C. is improving a little John is over those days he came home to make W. [William?] Smyth [sic] coffine [coffin?] This is Gortin fair Day the [there?] will be some [word?] to night – from him we have got no letter from T [Thomas?] Hay since the last one. I hope he is all wright [right?] in Ladysmyth - [Ladysmith?] I will give you all I can of news how we are doing [every?] week I was not going to let you know.
