| Transcript | [Front of Envelope] Mr James -A- Smyth Southwoodslee p o Essex County Ontario Canada [Stamped] [NEWTOWNSTEWART?] PM 10 0 AU 13 97 Written at Top of Page: 97 ans [Answered?] [Back of Envelope]: [Stamped] PLUMBRIDGE 3 AU 13 97 [Stamped] [SOUTHWOODSLEE?] [ ?] Letter 1 Page 1 Castledamph Aug 13th 1897 My Dear James - Once more I take The pleasure of letting you know that we are all in good helth [health?] at present - and we hope and trust That you are all well in Canada - Well – Thomy [Tommy?] Hay and his Sister Elisa has come over - They come [sic] to Gortin on friday 6th and William, Bella, and John Gilky went over on Sunday evening - to see them - William went Back for Them - On Wensday [Wednesday?] evening so They are stoping [stopping?] here cince [since?] - The [They ?] look very well he looks as well as ever you saw him fat and read [red?] – [Page 2] he has The Military Suit on and looks well Spurs and all he has three Suits with him and William and the others putts [put?] them on and you would not know them when on They have to the 27 of this month to stop in this contry [country?] then home and then off for india perhaps never to return We were [tramping?] our Hay yestaday [yesterday?] and they were all helping us as the day was pretty good we got up 6 cocks - this day is wet they are going to the road now we have 10 cocks up and 4 to put up unless the road there is not much to do now - we did not know of them coming [comming?] to Uncle Chales [Charles?] sent over word when the [they?] come to Gortin - we were prepearing [preparing?] [Page 3] for the Shore But now we cannot go to they leave and that will be long - however as we have neither flare nor [oven?] but our own if the weather permits we will go sometime even leat [late?] This Miss Macklin is a Sons Daughter of what we call Old Andrew Macklin- N-Stuart [Newtownstewart?] Miss Dunbars and hi [he?] is Cusions [cousins?] -The [there?] were [sic] another of them up cince [since?] – your uncle Charles and Mrs will be over on Sunday evening William is going over for them in the morning they [the?] Dunbars will be up - so you will miss it all Willie J Duncan is going off again on the 10th Sept - we got all the examination papers I think the [they?] are hard for them. J Huston [Houston?] took them over and the [they?] are not Back yet We got all the others papers I am afraid they will not do many of them. [Page 4] John would been smart if he had continued at school - he is a good player of the fiddle now he can play any tune almost as well as [Daniel?] without any learning he can do anything - or pick up any tune he hears - I see you had a good Day on the 12 as well as we. Mr Steen has stired [stirred] up ill feeling among the Cong [congregation?]-- he has asked Sandy Duncan to sing again so he leads it now Miss Dunbars sits Behind us - so they will neither lead it nor [rise?] it more - he Mr Steen is preaching in the greatest of wrath every Sunday cinse [since?] - the Sunday that he raised the singing himself it was nearly impossibly [impossible?] to listen to him - and he is not much Better cince [since?] - nor likely to be for some time to come [No signature on Letter] [End note in different script says] You can correct any errors you see for Father forgets [Page 5] The people was afraid he would Dismiss Miss Dunbar But she is not much afraid of him he dose [does] not ask to control her after School hours - neither has he any power to Do So - She got a letter from you And her mother was up in our house on Sunday evening last - - you may tell Uncle That often I was going to write to him and has never got at yet Tell him That old Margets [Margaret’s?] money is never menchioned [mentioned?] But perhaps if he is not took short he might give it up yet - I now conclude By sending our love and Bests [best?] Respects to all.- and to Mr and Mrs Allenson and family I remain yours John J [John James?] Smyth |
