My Dear James
In answer of your [sic] which
we rec [received?] all wright [right?] on on
[sic]
Monday the first of Aug and all the papers
the same day - and which give us a good lot
of news every way - you had a hard time of
it and by the appearance of the papers the
[they?] were all in pretty ill to do I
think the people here knows very little
about them J Houston came over to hear your
letter and Eliza had to take papers & a
letter on to Mrs and Miss Dunn [would?] hear it and
see the papers She thinks if you were in
this country now that you could keep
yourself going with prizes at the
examination as there is plenty gets born to [25?]
[50?] But perhaps they are better than
you are yet

[Page 2]
you will be the better of a little
while now to rest yourself. But I supose
[suppose?] you will hardly get it we think
you have done very well. For your time as
you might count nothing on all. The learning
you get here will you go on another year or what
do you think will you do as we can give
you know [no?] advice on this - that is with
regard to what till [sic] do - as you know Best
yourself - if you think of going on again
we will try and keep you going another year
But you can form no opinion untill [until?]
you get the account of the examination and see how
you have done. What Does your uncle and
aunt think or what would they advise you till
do they are right to be abel [able?] to give
you a good advice at how to proceed in the
future

[Page 3]
But dont loose courage now no matter whither
[whether?] you come out all wright [right?]
or not try again is a good maxim especially
[especially?] in anything thats good and for
a good purpose - when you get the account of
the examination Send it over and what you
think of dowing [doing?] - and what time you
need any More Money - and where to make it
payable do not Keep Back nor loose courage
no matter what happens so long as you have your
helth [health?] So I think this is anough
[enough?] on this well we have our hay all cut
in July we have the meadow at the Burn up the
other is all [lossed?] and the weather is now
changed and it may not be got up for a while
now

[Page 4]
[---?] people in this county are all well. nothing
new - to send you the meal and flour is
Come Down again as the war is almost over
meal and flour went up to a great hight [height?]
when the war commenced But now its as low
as ever wich [which?] we are not sorrow [sorry?]
for- We had no sheep in Gortin fair the day before
was very wet and they could not be gathered
Tom and William was in it - we have some
thoughts of going to the Shore to the Downhill
- we all join in sending
our Love to all our friends Both young and old
nomore at present
Yours John J Smyth [John James Smyth?]
